Who is this Javier guy?
Hi! I'm Javier Ortiz, writer, director and star of Entry Level. I came out here to the Indie GoGo community for your assistance in helping us making this film. If you liked the video that brought you up here (the one right above this summary) then I hope you would like to watch the entire movie. It's a fun high concept story centered around the world of retail and underground cloning labs.
I been working behind the scenes since I was 20 years old. I've graduated from both University of Houston in Media Communications and Full Sail University in Film. I written and produced many different projects. I've also been involved in directing music videos. For the last few years I been also involved in the comedy circuit around Los Angeles and it has truly been the greatest time I have ever had. I been both learning and performing with the help of great mentors throughout different venues such as Acme Comedy, iOWest, Upright Citizens Brigade and the Miles Stroth Workshop. Last summer along with many up and coming writer/comedians we started the sketch group Dumbshit Mountain. And we've been quite successful along the way. We have our share of media coverage thanks to Tosh.0, Yahoo News, Newsweek, Cracked.com among others.
But this particular project has nothing to do with my group. This is a venture between myself and JML Entertainment and many great producers and collaborators who share my passion of making a fun story and involving our talented friends. A few of them are also fellow alumnis from Full Sail such as Jason Lombardo (executive producer) and Valerie Walbrandt (producer & casting director). I'm looking forward to work with them this coming summer and make this exciting film come through.
What's an Entry Level?
Entry Level is a 20-minute comedy short film set around Los Angeles, CA. The story is about a recent college grad unable to land a job in his field. His boredom and curiosity gets him in trouble when he discovers a secret basement inside their stockroom. And inside the basement he discovers his boss is using the space as an illegal lab dedicated for the human cloning. And then using the experiments with some of his co-workers. The story its a cross between Office Space and Eternal Sunshine. Two of my favorite films of all time. It's been something of a lifelong dream of mine to tell a story like this, since its partial true events that I'm sure many recent college grads can relate to the story. Of course, the cloning lab did not exist, but sometimes I wished it did. Now I want to share a fun little story with the world.
He's asking for money, but how much?
In order to make this project a reality, I'm going to need to raise $20,000 dollars. Even though my producers have access to equipment, we still have to hired a crew of talented people. We also have other things that need to be purchased, acquired and/or rented before we can get out there and shoot it properly. These include getting our actors, their make-up and wardrobe, transportation, art direction & production design which includes making a space looks like a cloning lab, and a few special effects.
In addition, my director of photography and I are discussing the possibility of shooting in 16mm film. We are putting together our resources and see if we can find good telecine prices for the digital conversion. But its very possible since nowadays the gear are so much cheaper to find thanks to High Def. After the film's been shot, a portion of funds raised will lastly go towards the various aspects of post-production, such as editing, sound design, and color correction, at a professional post-production house.
Other Ways You Can Help
It's my hope that upon completion, the finished film will travel and play at film festivals around the world, starting with Sundance 2014. And maybe work our way to Austin's SXSW or even Cannes next May. Which is also another dream of mine, since I once interned at a Cannes festival while attending film school and I had the greatest time of my life.
