Entoforms

Future fossils by macouno

The campaign has ended

Thank you all for contributing! It has been a whirlwind 2.5 months, and even though we haven't reached the ultimate goal, you've all made a huge difference!

Even though the campaign is over, of course it's only the beginning for the Entoforms. Keep an eye on the official website, and feel free to contact me in case you'd like to purchase one (or several).

Thanks also to those who retweeted my messages, you've all really helped. And congratulations to Eduardo from Mexico City for winning his very own unique Entoform!

Thanks again!

Dolf (macouno)

    What's the deal?

This campaign will fund the creation, and exhibition of a series of limited issue, highly collectible, art pieces called Entoforms. They are artificial life, generated in the computer, printed in 3d, grown, and collected by macouno.

    What I need money for

Making art takes an investment of not only time but also money. Not only for final production, but also for lots, and lots of testing. Here is a rundown of the costs involved in this project.

    • Half of the budget has been reserved for the creation of my gifts to you!

    • 3D printing
Printing in 3D is still a very new technology. It is really quite cool, but it's not yet cheap, especially in the more exotic materials (Sterling silver for instance). It starts at $1.- and goes up to as much as $20.- per cubic centimetre.

    • Presentation supplies
Boxes, labels, pins, and such all have to be ordered from specialist Entomology suppliers. The boxes have to seal properly, the labels have to be acid free, and the pins rust proof.

    • Various art, and office supplies
Drills, pliers, drill bits, nails, stickers, paper, envelopes, boxes, postage stamps. In short... a multitude of items is required to take the Entoforms from a concept to a finished product.

    • Space rental
In august of 2011 the Entoforms will be exhibited in association with a renowned art gallery in Amsterdam. In this case part of the cost is covered by the gallery and part by the artists.

    • Foodstuffs
For the duration of the project, the artist has to be fed. This keeps him running at peak performance. Unfed he becomes grumpy, uninspired & altogether unproductive.

    Giving back to the community

The Entoforms are created with custom/new python scripts in Blender 3D, an open source (free) program. These scripts (addons), are not only useful for this project, but in some cases the entire 3D community. All the scripts will be released to the on-line community.

    Project timeline

I actually started working on the Entoforms back in January of 2011, and I foresee much more time than the span of this campaign being spent on them. The Campaign is here to fund the work's continuation during 2011, and at least 2 art exhibits within that year. The deadline is on the opening of the first exhibit of the Entoforms!

If you want to follow the project, be sure to check out the blog. Every time a new generation of Entoforms has been grown, a blog post will be made detailing the progress. Many pictures and videos can be found there.

    Thank you very much

Thank you ever so much for your consideration, and time. If you can not help out with the project yourself, please consider sharing a link to the project on facebook or twitter. The more people see this page, the bigger the chance that this campaign will be a success!

There are also two banner images available if you want to put a link to this campaign on your website.

Thank you for making this project possible!
