EMJC Stained Glass Window Project

Help us repair our 90 year old Stained Glass Windows and preserve an Historic Brooklyn Synagogue

Since 1924, the East Midwood Jewish Center has been a source of meaning and inspiration for thousands of people around the world.

Our home, an historic Renaissance Revival building on Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn is on the National Register of Historic Places.  The sanctuary is capped with a magnificent stained glass dome and twelve three-storied tall stained glass windows, each panel exquisitely depicting one of the original 12 Tribes of ancient Israel.

The Dome and the two largest windows, which have suffered tremendously over decades and recent storms, are currently under repair with the help of a matching grant.

In ancient Israel, there was a biblical tradition of crowd-funding, where every adult, rich or poor, younger or older, would contribute half a "shekel" for the maintenance of the Wilderness Sanctuary. The one day each year when we remember that age-old custom fell on February 9, 2013 and is called Shabbat Shekalim - the Sabbath of Shekels.

We are asking you to help us keep this treasure in Brooklyn safe and sound. We are asking for some of your "Shekels".

Whether you were bar mitzvah'ed or married here, whether you have been in the building only once, or maybe you just appreciate the sort of elegant craftsmanship which is becoming increasingly rare in our days, we need your help - now. Please donate whatever you can towards this urgent project - before our matching grant expires.

With your tax-deductible help, we will be able to save, restore, and proudly maintain some of the most beautiful and meaningful stained glass windows - anywhere - for generations to come.
