What is the Solar Decathlon?
The US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is an award-winning program that challenges twenty teams from Universitites across the world to compete against each other. The purpose of this competition is to educate student participants and the public about the many cost-saving opportunities presented by clean-energy products. Ecohabit is the name of our cost-effective; energy-efficient, solar-powered home designed and build by students across a variety of majors at Stevens Institute of Technology. By using out uniquely decided smart technology, our house evolves over time, adapting to its users, and their lifestyles, and is some sense gets better with age.
Stevens was 1 of only 20 teams chosen to compete at the 2013 Solar Decathlon competition. This provides clear evidence of our motivation and willingness to take risks and achieve success in solar technology and innovation. With your help and our team’s dedication we plan on bringing home a 1st place finish to Stevens in addition to donating the home to a United States Veteran.
What We Need & What You Get
Any contribution would help us out greatly! From 2x4's to build the home, energy-efficient appliances, decorations to cash. We would be more than happy to receive anything that can help us impress the judges at the competition in Irvine, California.
The impact of this project is huge not only to us students, but to the public and the family we donate Ecohabit to. Our entire school is behind Ecohabit and we are very proud that our team has been selected out of hundreds to compete. As students we are provided with unique training that prepares us to enter our nation’s clean-energy workforce. Additionally, through our marketing effort we are addressing the public about the opportunities that clean-energy products present. Finally, we are most excited about the final step- the donation process. In the last Solar Decathlon competition, our team joined with Habitat for Humanity and donated the home to a needy family in Washington DC. This time around, we plan on teaming up with the mayors office in San Diego, California to donate the home to a well-deserved United States Veteran.
Other Ways You Can Help
Considering this is our second time competing in this competition, our team hopes to make as much noise about Ecohabit and the competition as possible. We are very confident in our design and think this is the year we can bring home the 1st place finish with your help!
