WE FOUND LAND!!! - A piece of agricultural land located just outside of Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
Eco Ruralis has been given the rights to farm a beautiful parcel of land by one of our members for FREE. We began our land search 2 months ago and we finally found a suitable area to farm. Its close proximity to the city allows volunteers easy access to bicycle there or take local bus transportation. We now need your help to make our dream of making a large traditional heirloom seed garden a reality.
WHAT IS ECO RURALIS? - A non-profit NGO that supports traditional and organic peasant farming.
Our office is based in Cluj-Napoca, located in the Transylvania
region of Romania. In 2009, a group of small family farmers came
together from several regions of the country to form our
organization. Participation in Eco Ruralis has grown to include
250 families and over 500 members altogether. Members and staff have formed strong bonds and what brings us together is our mutual passion for continuing small-scale sustainable agriculture with the use of heirloom seeds. Our organization truly believes that seed sovereignty provides food sovereignty.
OUR PROBLEM - Less use of traditional seeds produces less healthy, organic food.
Many rules and regulations have limited the use of traditional seeds. Large,
multinational corporations produce and
lots of hybrid seeds and GMO's in general, and
their control of the seed market limits the use of
traditional seeds. The health and environmental impact caused by this has been documented very well. This affects food security and we are fighting back.
OUR SOLUTION - To plant, collect and distribute as many heirloom seeds as possible!
Many of our members save their seeds and send them to us after harvesting. At the end of each season, we build up a bigger inventory and distribute more and more. We will also give more people an opportunity to gain gardening experience and educate them on how they can save seeds. Farming is direct action - 90% of our garden will be used for seeds, 10% will be used for vegetables.
EXPERIENCE - We have multiplied traditional seeds at a university garden over the past 2 years.
A local professor of agro-biodiversity works with Eco Ruralis staff
and volunteers as well as agronomy students to multiply and collect
heirloom seeds at their university. This experience has been truly beneficial, providing us with useful skills for seed saving and cultivation. It made us realize what we could do with our own larger garden. That chapter of our story will begin soon :)

THE TEAM - Our team is funny, sweet, helpful and super passionate about subsistence farming.
Eco Ruralis is the national coordinator of WWOOF Romania (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). All of us have volunteered in gardens and on farms. Some of us even grew up on farms and helped with family gardens. We all love learning the rich knowledge that peasants and other farmers possess so that we can eat delicious, healthy food. Each day, we hope to utilize that know-how as best we can to better protect the proud social and cultural heritage of Romanian peasant agriculture.
