This is the story of a building. A building which once housed over 1000 souls. A building surrounded by myths in the Rochester community. A building which tells the story of dramatically shifting attitudes towards the mentally ill. Originally designed in the early 1950s when the Rochester State Hospital had over 4000 patients, it opened in 1959. It has been vacant since 1995. We have been able to go inside and to talk with some of those who lived and worked there in order to understand the impact that the Medical and Surgical Building had on their lives.
