The DutchMill is an interactive public art piece that will represent the people, culture and art of the Netherlands at the Black Rock Arts Festival (aka Burning Man) as part of the Circle of Regional Effigies, or C.O.R.E. The project seeks to create one of the most familiar symbols of the Netherlands by errecting a large Windmill on the Playa and we feel very proud to have been accepted as a CORE project by the Black Rock Arts Foundation and given an initial grant to get started.
However, the amount of the grant is not enough to make this project and our dream come true! We need funding from people like you to help make this unique art piece happen.
Details of the Project
When people think of the Netherlands one of the most frequent symbols of the country is the windmill. The Dutch people have been embracing man of the 10 Principles of Burning Man such as Radical Inclusion, Community/Civic Responsibility, and Immediacy through working together to reclaim their country from the sea for hundreds of years. As such we feel that a Dutch Mill is the perfect representation of the Dutch Burners and a great fit for our first (of hopefully many) CORE projects.
The project will be designed and built through a collaboration of local Burners and Artists with the actual construction done in the US and will use donated recycled wood as much as possible. We have already partnered with the Reno CORE project and they have graciously offered to allow us to work along side them in Reno.
Our project will be a very unique piece on the Playa not only in that it will be a collobartion of work done in two countries, but also in the overall appearance of the piece. Rising out of the baren salt flat dessert will be a structure that is covered in brilliant colors and vibrant lights at night. The outside of the piece will be covered in fabric and be strikingly different from the cutout wood and painted pieces that tradditionally mark CORE projects. This innovative decoration style will not only be unique but serves to solve one of the biggest problems of the project. How can we allow all the artists and participants in our project in the Netherlands help in decorating a piece built in the US? The fabric pieces will allow the art to be done locally and then added to the piece during assembly. The large sheets will be stretched across the panels of the base of the mill.
The structure itself will have an octagon shaped base in tradditonal style.
Below a picture of one of the design drawings:
The panels will be painted in a large abstract mural by Daniella Rubinovitz (http://www.daniellarubinovitz.com/
Beautiful Inside and Out
Our project is not just beautiful on the ouside, but meant to be a place of sanctuary and museum to Dutch art and culture. The inside will be open with a couple of benches so that people can sit and relax with local music played through a very small sound system.
Inside the mill, there will be a bike, connected to the blades of the mill, using a nice piece of Dutch engineering. Anyone can go for a ride and make the mill actually work. Yes, make those blades spin and illuminate the playa!
Shining Bright in the Night
One of the most amazing aspects of Burning Man is the vivid colors and lights at night. Our project will be radicially illuminated in a few ways. Each of the blades will be brightly illuminated in a softly changing flood or color by a strip of LEDs down the entire length. The entire outside will be illuminated with soft white flood lights shining off the colorful fabric sides.
How your Donation will help!
In order for our project and vision to happen we need help funding it. There are many pieces of the design that will be quite expensive. Here is a quick run-down of the various parts:
- Wood for construction
- Lighting and illumination
- Fabric / markers / paint
- Transporation costs
- Interior decorations / materials
- Clean up / tools
- Fundraising gifts
TOTAL ESTIMATE - €3500
Additionally, many of the people involved in this project will be paying for their own costs to arrive in the United States and stay there for many weeks to build the project. These people are DONATING THEIR OWN TIME AND MONEY and we are not asking you to fund their airfare or time away from their family and friends to make this happen.
What do you get for your donations?
Well in addition to helping make this project happen and sharing it with tens of thousands of festival goers, you will get the following commemorative momentos for various support levels. NOTE- Donations are accepted in EUROS.
