What is DUMB?
In October of 2012, after a vague doctor's assessment and much googling, I decided to stop talking for all but 15 minutes a day. See, usually my throat pain goes away quickly, but this pain showed up in May, and it stayed. Over the summer it got worse, and worse, and worse, until it was constant and unbearable.
In order to get better as quickly as possible (and to not be in pain), I stopped talking. I stopped singing. I stopped everything.
Take a moment to imagine what this would be like for you. How would you feel? How would you communicate with your loved ones, friends, coworkers, neighbours? Could you do it?
IN JUST ONE WEEK OF THIS CAMPAIGN, I HAVE MET MY FIRST GOAL
Thanks to everyone who gave, who shared, and who read -- now let's keep the momentum going and see how far we can take this thing!
My NEW goals!
Now that I know I can print DUMB #1 and #2 and bring them out to CAKE (The Chicago Alt Comics Expo, June 15-16), I'm looking further. With your support, and the support of the people around you, any (or ALL) of these wonderful things could happen!
IF I REACH...
$2,500 I will go to MECAF, the Maine Comic Arts Festival, in Portland, Maine on May 19th! More sales to be made, friends to connect with, and exposure to industry folks, all in the lovely town of Portland.
$3,000 will make sure that I get a real website up, which will give me a platform from which I can continue to spread the word about DUMB and my other ventures! I will also print a limited run of DUMB translated into French to bring to the Festival de la Bande-Dessinée de Montréal, June 1-2!
$4,000 will see DUMB #3 and #4 printed and published by August - check out some of the new perks, your copies could be included!
$5,000 will ensure that I bring all four issues of DUMB (don't worry, it's just the first four in the series) to both SPX (Bethesda, Maryland) in September, and the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival in November!
From there, I dare to say, I'll be some kinda real cartoonist!
What this means to me
I'm... desperately in love with comics. AND I'm also really attached to my voice. These two major parts of my identity coming together is significant to the point that I can't even express it in words, and I really want to share it with you!
Any bit of support you can provide, even if it's just linking to this campaign somewhere, will keep me on track. While you're at it, maybe tell someone about it WITH YOUR VOICE! Don't neglect your precious vocal cords, go vibrate some air at someone you like!
