Together, We Can Make Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault a Crime of the Past
Hi, I'm Mike Abramson and I'm the founder of DrinkSavvy(TM), a startup that with your backing can enable us to perfect our unique technology to significantly reduce the chance that you or a loved one will become the victim of drug-facilitated sexual assault. Why do I care about this topic? Within the past 3 years, 3 of my close friends, and myself, have been the unwitting victims of consuming an odorless, colorless, and tasteless drug slipped into our drink. With over a million estimated victims every year, chances are that someone close to you has had a similar experience, but together, we can prevent it from happening to anyone else.
The problem is that date rape drugs are odorless, colorless, and tasteless once they’re in your drink. We all know not to leave our drinks unattended, but the reality is it’s impossible to keep an eye on your drink all night. So what’s the solution? With the help of Dr. John MacDonald, a professor of chemistry at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and with the help of Contract Researching Organizations, DrinkSavvy is developing material that will immediately change color to warn you if a drug is slipped into your drink.
Great! But it doesn’t stop there. Together, DrinkSavvy will have the funding necessary to fully develop the material and drinkware directly from this material, such as, Plastic Straws and Stirrers, Plastic Party Cups, and Glassware.
That means discrete, 100% effortless, and continuous drink monitoring throughout the night, because the same drinkware that you are drinking with…is also the color changing material that makes invisible drugs visible.
While DrinkSavvy’s initial goal is to perfect our design to make our products available online and free to select rape crisis centers, DrinkSavvy’s ultimate goal is to use the success of this campaign to convince bars, clubs, and colleges to make DrinkSavvy the new safety standard and eventually make drug-facilitated sexual assault a crime of the past. So please, back DrinkSavvy to be a part of something that will change the world for the better. Back DrinkSavvy to be a part of something that has never been done before, and back DrinkSavvy to prevent someone you care about from possibly being the victim of drug-facilitated sexual assault. Thank you all so much in advance, and remember, when you’re out drinking, drink smart, drink safe, DrinkSavvy.
Brag About How You Were There At The Very Beginning
ALL contributors, no matter how small, will be memorialized forever on our website (unless you do not want to be). Your generous purchase of DrinkSavvy products through this campaign will be used to perfect our prototyped material design so that it can be made into your drinkware rewards. We have already made great progress on this front, so this is expected to take only 2-8 months. After that, it's as simple as us narrowing down our list of potential United States manufacturers to mass produce the material with the drinkware and distribute them for us. Due to the negotiation process, this is expected to take 1-3 months. Distribution will eventually be worldwide!
That's around the time that you can expect to be the first to receive our never before seen technology. You will be part of a select few people to receive them before they are available to the general public (and we would love to hear your feedback!). Want to be part of our design and decision making process? Leave comments, because we read them!
If for some unexpected chance we do not reach our goal, you can rest assured we will keep you informed of our progress, and once we DO reach our goal through other funding means and have our final products, you will still be the first to receive your rewards before anyone else.
Other Ways You Can Help
The Economy is tough: Some people just can’t contribute, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be a part of DrinkSavvy's success story! Help spread the word, because finding someone to contribute that wouldn't have otherwise known about this campaign is as if you contributed yourself! Also, don't forget to use the Indiegogo share tools! Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, visit our website, and tell blog sites and the news media about us!
Q: Is it the drink that changes color or is it the cup, straw, or glass?
A: It's the cup, straw and glass.
Q: Why are you only offering the straws/stirrers and plastic cups right now?
A: At our current stage, straws/stirrers and cups are the easiest to make and distribute so we can ensure you get your rewards quickly. But don't worry, very soon, DrinkSavvy (as well as your local bars, clubs, and universities) will offer DrinkSavvy glassware, and eventually even bottles and cans!
Q: What drugs will DrinkSavvy products detect?
A: Initially, our goal is the detection of the three most common "date rape" drugs (GHB, Ketamine, Rohypnol). Eventually, our drinkware will be updated regularly as new drugs become popular.
Q: When do I have to replace your straws and cups?
A: Think of our disposable straws and cups just like any other disposable straw and cup. But, our goal is that a single straw or cup should be reusable until a color change occurs, however, reusing a straw or cup for more than one night is not recommended (and kinda gross if you think about it :-)).
Q: Cool! So I'm totally safe, right?
A: No way! DrinkSavvy products are a big step towards preventing drug rape, but even if you’re using our drinkware, it is important to keep your wits about you and trust your instincts if you think something is not right. And, as always, don't leave your drink unattended, don't accept opened drinks, if someone buys you a drink, make sure you watch the bartender make it, don't drink from punch bowls, come with friends and leave with friends. To be clear, it has to be said unequivocally that there is NEVER an excuse for sexual assault and it is NEVER your fault if it happens to you.
Q: Are the pictures above what the DrinkSavvy products are going to look like?
A: Maybe! The picture of the before/after GHB application is a real picture of one of our possible color changing materials that we will be exploring after the success of this campaign, but the other pictures are renderings of how we envision some DrinkSavvy products looking. The finished product may vary during the design/prototyping process, and we're just as excited as you are to see the final results!
