Who is Dr. Shroud?
Hi! My name is Rob Feldman and I'm an animator and creator of cartoons, film and toys. I am perhaps best known as the mind behind Dr. Shroud (http://www.drshroud.com), a long running, cult hit, animated series that has garnered a substantial worldwide fanbase over the past 10+ years.
While Dr. Shroud exists as an animated series, it has always been my dream to launch a live action version. Even though I have been offered the option several times to make Dr. Shroud as a feature film, it seemed that very few producers "got it", while others could not raise the necessary money to get it off the ground. Still others perhaps deemed it too risky of a project, something of which seems to be the major blocker in Hollywood these days!
That's why I decided, with the help of an incredible group of people, that the best route was to take matters into my own hands and create the live action vision I have for Dr. Shroud: a b-movie horror series shot in the vein of a 1970s live action TV show, something you might see at a drive in theater or two dollar movie. Picture a mix of the original "Salem's Lot" meets the classic Batman series from 1966, elements I combined when I first made the original Dr. Shroud print comic book in 1997 (yes, I still have a bunch of copies---see the Perks section!)
I am hoping you too can envision this and the crazy fun it can be. It is part of a genre that is rarely visited in indie film and something quirky and unique that I know you will love, complete with puppets, blood, vampires, supersuits and gadgets---yes, gadgets!!
What We Need
We are asking for $12,000 to film six (6) five-minute episodes of Dr. Shroud, collectively thirty minutes of footage that can be shown in serialized segments or altogether as a half hour show. I funded the first teaser out of my own pocket and quickly realized the time and expense involved!
You can imagine the amount of work it takes to get a project like this off the ground. We need wardrobe, makeup, special effects, props, gadget makers, location and car rentals (a hearse!), a cinematographer, an editor and post production people. We have a great crew of dedicated people, but there are some necessary expenses that are more service oriented and can cost some money to make this production outstanding. Each dollar will go to the production of Dr. Shroud and we want to ensure that you get what you pay for! When creating this budget, I aimed to be as conservative and resourceful as possible using local talent, local stores and used equipment wherever possible.
The Perks: What You Get!
To make it worth your while, I cooked up some serious perks (to your right -->). For starters, you can get your name in the credits! OR, how about this: I have a bunch of Dr. Shroud #1 comics still with me, printed in original newsprint. In fact, I have numerous copies of all four issues (#'s 1-4)---all originals! While I have seen these on Ebay for over $20, you can own one for yourself---all originals, signed by me. Not enough? Okay, how about a shirt? A poster? THE action figure? A signed prop?
All of those are great, but if you have the cash, you might want to go for the gusto---that's right, lunch with Dr. Shroud himself! Yes, you heard that one right---George Gdovin, who stars as Dr. Shroud, will suit up and meet you for lunch in costume. He might even pull up in the hearse---try explaining that one to your Mom!
Whether you decide to put in $5, $50 or even $2,000, every dollar goes to bringing this incredible creator-owned indie produced series to you.
If we don't reach our goal, we will still use what we manage to make, delivering on every perk we promised. We'll just make as many episodes as the funding will allow--- that's the great thing about short form episodic material. BUT, we would love to bring you the series in its entirety----so you can see how it ends. Will Dr. Shroud find his daughter Wendy? Will his bloodthirst or dementia get the best of him? Or will Willie the puppet bumble the whole thing? There's only one way to find out!
You are the new Hollywood.
The great thing about this project is that we aren't relying on a single investor or producer who doesn't "get it" or who keeps stalling about finding the money. We are going straight to the fans, to YOU, to make this dream realized. It's not about Hollywood anymore---it's about fans and those who believe in great projects, investing in things THEY want to see.
We have some great partners in line who will lend a hand in helping to secure major talent and distribute this for us, providing we can raise the money to produce it. They have championed the animated series in the past and I am confident they will do the same with this project.
If you can't contribute, we understand. If possible, please just share this on Facebook or Twitter or use the social tools provided by Indiegogo. We really appreciate it and hope that you can spread the word---every dollar counts, but every share counts exponentially. :)
