What exactly is DOUBLE ESPRESSO? Well, like the intense dark brew, this is a Web Series that "caffeinates" contemporary buzzwords and phrases with a blend of word play, philosophical nonsense and politically indirect half-sense in the form of mini-sodes or espressodes (as we call them).
Our mission is not to create another banal and sterile "made for television" web series. We're aiming dangerously higher, demystifying the mass media's mixed messages, satirizing corporate doublespeak, poking holes in political hyperbole and unraveling the common and uncommon usage of every day language. With that, we believe DOUBLE ESPRESSO is truly an imaginative, independent vision, original and on the cutting edge of the brave new frontier of web entertainment.
DOUBLE ESPRESSO also observes the old adage if you're going to tell them the truth, you had better make them laugh.
Season 2 of DOUBLE ESPRESSO features a satiric jab at BIG PHARMA as the new drug OFFENDIA goes on the market. Please help us produce this espressode with your generous donation, thanks!
DOUBLE ESPRESSO is the creation of Michael Arturo, a New York born theater professional, who has more than two decades of credits as a playwright, screenwriter, actor, photographer, videographer, producer and now a web series creator. His plays have been produced in New York, London, Boston and Los Angeles. A proud member of the Screen Actor's Guild, he has appeared as an actor in several independent productions and made his television debut in 1999 on "The West Wing."
Manuel Bermudez, a graduate of USC film, a filmmaker, actor and stand-up comic, is featured along with Arturo. With Bermudez's stand up comedic talent and Arturo's background in theater, the espressodes are animated in the style of "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Seinfeld," Steven Colbert, Woody Allen and the Theater of the Absurd.
Together, the intellectual wise cracking duo debate and dissect topics that range from the recession to corporatism to identity politics to meaning of being 'Found Dead'.
Produced by Norma Vega, whose background is in black and white still photography, DOUBLE ESPRESSO marks her debut as a producer and segment director. And filmmaker/director Mark Coger rounds out the company. Mr. Coger's "An American Journalist" (2008) was featured at the prestigious Method Fest film festival.
First Season Completed 16 Espressodes. (here, check it out)
Our goal here is to find the backers and raise the capital needed to produce a second season. Our modestly budgeted second season will also consist of 16 espressodes ranging from 4 to 8 minutes in length.
When one considers donating to a project such as ours they weigh the significance and the merits of such a project and what purpose it might have in the world today. A web series that features edgy political comedy will NOT cure a disease or cloth the poor or house the homeless ... it will however enrich the lives of the community it serves. It shouldn't have to pretend to be anything other than what it is to raise the funding needed to keep it going. However, there is always room for such a web series to support causes or concerns that might go beyond enriching the lives of the community it serves. And therein lies an opportunity for others in the community to bring forth that possibility. If you already sponsor a cause and would like wider exposure, we would like to help.
Many of our espressodes highlight specific locations, whether it be historical St. Vincent Court, Angel's Flight and the Bradbury Building in Downtown LA, the roof of the Standard Hotel, Forever Hollywood Cemetery or the Venice Canals. We are breaking new ground with DOUBLE ESPRESSO by fusing together many mediums, video, film, theater, stand-up comedy, poetry (actually word play), photography and music, while recognizing the historical cultural landmarks of our city and showcasing their appeal to the world of web entertainment.
What We Need & What You Get
Try as we may, monetizing the web series on the internet is very difficult and still very much in its infancy. It is an exciting time for the web series because very nearly ANYTHING GOES. But there are costs.
Production costs, which include shooting and editing, equipment rental and purchase, labor costs (actors/crew), travel (gas and possibly hotel) web hosting (vimeo/blip), locations, permits, insurance, and of course espressos for every one. Your generous donations will help us create quality espressodes, and hopefully you will have the satisfaction and joy in helping a project you love, one with a truly independent vision, reach a new level of success. Every dollar counts and everyone's backing is greatly appreciated.
We are also open to others -- entertainment professionals and the like -- offering services and or equipment ... we are more than open to your suggestions.
Other Ways You Can Help
We're so happy IndieGoGo has this section because there are alternative ways faithful followers and backers of DOUBLE ESPRESSO can help. As mentioned, we are based in the city of Los Angeles, we would like to propose a barter of our shooting in your place of business (cafe, art gallery, bar, restaurant, office, etc) for the promotion of said business (or a particular artist or exhibition). Our production needs are minimal -- natural lighting, three to four cast and crew, therefore we are very portable and usually take no longer than 90 minutes to finish an espressode. It's an extremely cool swap! Our first season espressode "LOGO MOFOs" featured the Hold Up Gallery in Little Tokyo Downtown Los Angeles.
DOUBLE ESPRESSO web series can be seen on over 20 video, blog and web series networks including Vimeo, Blip.tv, The Web Series Network, Youtube, ClickTv, Tumblr, Veoh, PopBox, Vizio, Blinkx, VodPod, Daily Motion, Itunes, Roku, Mefeedia, Metacafe, Clicker, Funny or Die and Facebook to name almost all of them. So a local business is assured a lot of free advertising, exposure and even product placement if possible. And hey, San Francisco and New York or any other city is not out of the question either. So invite us!
DOUBLE ESPRESSO would like to thank IndieGoGo for the opportunity to pursue backers for its second season on its wonderful website.
