What I'm Doing
Hi! My name's Matt. My wife was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in November 2010. It's been a stressful couple of years full of various treatments and painful physical and emotional recoveries, but we are now in what appears to be an inescapable economic hole.
Blindsided by this cancer stuff, we decided money didn't matter because I didn't want to allow it to take my wife from me. My wife had to undergo radioactive iodine treatment and external beam radiation, but now she's back and volunteering at the Bluegrass Rape Crisis Center with her time (she's still not in the best shape to work, but hopes that she will be soon).
We've not received any financial help from the government, though we did receive various discounts from the hospitals themselves. However, even after those were applied, our debt has actually gone out of our hands after the $100,000 mark--we just stopped trying to keep track.
In this vein, though, we had to borrow money from friends and family and I would like to pay them back if I can, and if we have money left over to pay the collections agencies, that would take a load off my wife's mind and in turn make me tremendously grateful. To this end, I'm trying out this Indiegogo campaign with my fingers crossed--contribute what you like and I'll draw you whatever you want (provided it's work-appropriate; a lot of my colleagues will see me working on these) using vector art software.
Your contribution will help in the peace of mind department for the strongest, most amazing, most beautiful woman I've ever met. I couldn't thank you enough for even reading this, but I'll give it a shot: thank you!!!
Why I'm Doing It
We need about a thousand dollars to pay back various friends and family from whom we owe money. Doesn't seem like much, but to us it is (we had to borrow it in pieces from people after choking down the taste of pride), and if there's anything left over we can finally start paying the collections agencies. My hopes are high.
I will send a drawing of whatever you'd like me to draw to anyone who contributes anything to the campaign over the amount of $10. I wish I could do more, but statistically someone would contribute a penny simply to see if I would spend hours on a drawing for it and I would have to honor my word, but it would make those who contributed more wait longer for theirs. My apologies for the limit; I must remain true to my word, but also loyal to all of you wonderful people helping me out here.
More About My Wife
The woman I married is using her spare time to volunteer at a rape crisis center, even though she has half her voice after two surgeries, hardly half her original arm strength, and is unable to work a for-pay job for now. She cannot sit still, idling away her time when she knows that someone in the community could use a helping hand. My wife is too full of compassion to focus on herself when she is capable of helping an organization such as the BRCC.
Ultimately, your contribution will help the greater community by helping her continue to be an actively engaged part of it.
Other Ways You Can Help
Even if you can't contribute, please feel free to show this campaign to anyone you think might be able to. You can also use the Indiegogo share tools to make it easier (in theory, a click of the mouse, but at worst, a click of the mouse and authentication).
Thank you so much!
