All life on this planet shares DNA.
DNA on a SHIRT™ displays what makes us different, and, more important, the bonds we share with all life. Primates have the closest DNA percentage to humans, with the orangutan alone sharing 96.4% DNA similarity.
At the time when this project was undertaken, the Phoenix Zoo was the proud home of the oldest living Bornean orangutan in North America: Duchess, a 52 year-old female. As one of the first animals to arrive at the Zoo, Duchess charmed the hearts of many the minute she arrived. She was born in the jungles of Borneo, where she was orphaned at a very young age. When Duchess came to Phoenix in 1962, it was determined that she was approximately two years old.
During her life, Duchess, the eventual matriarch of the Phoenix Zoo’s orangutan family, gave birth to seven babies. Currently, her three remaining children, along with her grandchildren, are living in zoos across the country. Her legacy lives on through her offspring, and she and her family have been strong ambassadors for their species.
Early in June 2012, keepers started to notice that Duchess wasn’t feeling well. The Phoenix Zoo’s on-site veterinary staff determined that she was suffering from high grade lymphosarcoma. This extreme form of cancer spread aggressively over the course of a couple weeks, and she passed away on June 24, 2012. Though she is gone, she lives on in the hearts of many.
Duchess entertained and mesmerized millions of visitors over her five decades at the Zoo. Most often, guests and staff would comment on her eyes and that when she looked at you, she seemed to be staring straight into your soul. She was wise and majestic, funny and serious, and playful and beautiful.
Denise Wagner joined the Phoenix Zoo as part of the primate staff in 2004 and was one of two main caregivers of Duchess and the other primates. Duchess had a tremendous impact on her and the other staff members. “She really made me realize what it was like to be an ambassador for the species," Wagner says.
“Duchess lives on at the Phoenix Zoo in Bess, Kasih and her other offspring in zoos across the country. She is not gone, as her legacy is still carried on with her family,” expressed Wagner. “She will always be remembered and havea special place in our hearts.”
DNA on a SHIRT wants to honor Duchess' importance and impact by highlighting her as the first animal to be presented on the premiere DNA ZOO TEE™. We want the shirts to be a celebration of her life, in memory of her and the legacy that she has left on the world. The Phoenix Zoo will receive 20% of all sales to go toward conservation efforts.
We want to use the premiere Duchess DNA print in the same way that Wagner envisions them;
“As her last great act as an ambassador for her species.”
The shirts and prints are designed to promote awareness and, more important, our connection. DNA ZOO TEES promises to help engage and show our connection, through the DNA fingerprint, narration panel and comparative badge on each shirt. We strongly believe that our products will engage people and help raise awareness. We feel that someday soon, zoos may be the only place where endangered animals will be able to exist.
The shirts are made of 100% brushed cotton, with the graphic color burned into the shirt to ensure comfort and durability. DNA ZOO TEES stand out from many other products on the market today.
Our vision for DNA on a SHIRT is that with our products, we create a catalyst for engagement through our vision of inspiring art, science and people.

We are going to make a difference and you can help!
The video says that humans share 98.6% DNA similarity to orangutans; the percentage is actually 96.4%, as stated in the campaign copy. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
How this will work:
When you place your order for a shirt through the Indiegogo site:
1) It will tally in the campaign and register that you want a shirt or print.
2) We will compile the list and contact you to find out the size, color and style of the shirt you want via email.
3) Your card will be charged at the END of the campaign; we then create and ship your shirt. We have been notified that some cards are being charged at the time of purchase and NOT at the end of the campaign. We are currently looking into this and we get back with an answer shortly.
4) A shipping charge will be added to your payment at the end of the campaign. Shipping cost will vary, depending on location.
5) Some of you who have purchased perks in the past may have noticed that your name has disappeared or that the perk has changed. Don't fret! We still have your purchase on file and will be emailing you to find out the specifications of your order. We appreciate your leniency with this issue.
This will help immensely with giving us a precise number of shirts and sizes needed, and is a great method to keep production cost down and allow us to only produce exactly what is needed.
Keep in mind, these are going to be limited edition productions that won't be repeated after we scale up production for our pending retail contract. (I can't wait to disclose who our new vendor is...)
