About Detecting Norman...
Detecting Norman is about a man named Norman Goldsmith, he's 35 and lives out of his mid-90's era Jeep Cherokee. He survives by pawning off valuable trinkets and items he finds by metal detecting every day. His goal is to find, what he believes to be, the most valuable metal detecting find anyone has ever found. The Holy Grail of finds. He's convinced this find will bring him fame and fortune, and the best part is today is the day he scans the last chunk of the beach. It must be out there.
Norman's nemesis is Jess, a petite Lifeguard that patrols the beach he has been scanning for the past 5 years. She's a strict hard ass who follows the rules to a tee and is not afraid to rule with an iron fist. Especially, when it comes to digging holes deeper than 16 inches. A newly passed law states that no one is allowed to dig holes deeper than 16 inches because of recent accidental deaths.
The overall tone for this film is Dark Comedy. In the same vein as Fargo, a Minnesota based movie by The Coen Brothers, Detecting Norman depicts dark events in such a stark way that it comes off as comedy.

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Sean Drummond. I am a Junior/Senior at Loyola Marymount University. It's a four year program, but I am doing it in three years. Here's a picture of me shooting a film last year called "There Will Be Crumbs".
I grew up in Minnesota and moved out to Los Angeles two years ago to pursue filmmaking and go to college. I started making films when I was 15 for my High School's Broadcast Media class. Since then, I have easily created over 50 videos. This includes a variety of music videos, narratives, documentaries, and commercial work. I have created commercial content for Allstate and Expedia.
Also, I was awarded Emerging Filmmaker for my documentary Beyond the Lens and Cub Award by Film Outside the Frame for my Sophomore film at LMU entitled "Shadow Dancing". Here's a picture of me accepting that latest award at Paramount Studios last week.

Breaking Down the Budget...
Below you can find a pie chart break down of where your donated money will be spent.
We have calculated our budget to a tee on this project. Every single dime has its destination pre-determined. If we exceed our fundraising goal, all extra donations will be put towards contigency cost. This is a recommend chunk for potential costs that we couldn't have foreseen. For example, we are using Loyola Marymount's University Camera and Grip equipment. If anything is broken while on the set, even on accident, we will be charged. Let me tell you, film equipment is expensive!
Also, you will see on the pie chart two interesting slices in relation to IndieGoGo. The first is the amount we have allotted to fund our perks. This covers the cost of T-Shirts, Posters, and printed stills. Most campaigns don't include this cost, but it is extremely important to address it. Although, I am raising $4000 for my film, 12.5% goes directly towards fullfilling the perks that entice you to donate.
The second IndieGoGo related slice is their cut of the projects goal. When fundraising with IndieGoGo, they take 9% of the funds if you do not reach your goal and 4% of the funds if you do reach your goal. We budgeted with the intention of reaching our goal:) Also, they charge a 3% processing fee to get the money to us after we have completed the fundraising phases!
The Perks and Merchandise!
I understand that donating is not your number one priority, but let's think of this as an exchange. By donating money, you will receive any number of perks. All of which, are located on the right hand side of the screen. If you donate $100 or more you will receive your choice of merchandise, t-shirt, poster, signed script, or large high quality printed still from the movie. My storyboard artists has been extremely generous with his talents and we have collaborated on designing t-shirts for Detecting Norman.
Rough Draft T-Shirt Designs (American Appareal):
David has been acting in nationwide commercials for the past 12 or so years. You may recognize him from projects such as AT&T, VW, and Miller Lite commercials.
Toniann MonacoThis will be my second project working with Toniann. She is brilliant, dedicated, and committed to the roles she plays. I have 100% faith that she will do an outstanding job.
The Team Behind the Project!
I am extremely lucky to have a great crew on board this project. In film school, it is a constant struggle to get the best crew members top work on your film. I was fortunate enough to snag a great group of driven workers.
Ali graduated last year from LMU and is already working in the industry. I was extremely lucky to get her to work on this project in between her paid gigs. Check out our cinematography reel here.
Chelsea is an extremely driven young woman and there is no one else that I would love to help me produce this film. She's worked on a variety of professional productions, so she knows exactly how to organize a successful production. Check out her imdb here.
Detecting Norman is going to have a plethora of steadicam shots, we are extremely grateful to have Steve on board. He has been setting industry standards with his steadicam shots for years. Check out his past credits on imdb here.
This is just a select handful of the crew. We have 15 wonderful crew members who have committed their entire weekend to this production. The project could not go on without them.
We are shooting this project at the beautiful West Coast Beach - Dockweiler. Here are a few photos from the location scout a few days ago!
The Impact of this project!
This project is important to me because it is more than just my Junior Thesis film. I've created a lot of content and material for other people, but this project is my time to experiment and find my own voice. There isn't any corporations or companies trying to influence the final project, it's solely up to me.
Ultimately, this is a building block for discovering and fine tuning my style and flavor. This is also a warm up project for future, bigger short films and a possible feature film in the works.
By investing in this film, you are investing in more than just one specific project. You're investing in me, my future, and my cast's and crew's future. Each and every one of us is living in Los Angeles and pursuing our dreams. We can't do it alone, we need your help. Please pick a perk, donate to Detecting Norman, and have faith that your donation means so much more than any monetary value.
Share the Project!
Don't forget to use IndieGoGo's share tools to share this project with your friends. We understand that you may not be in the financial situation to donate, but we would greatly appreciate it if you would share this project with your friends. Each and every donation is extremely integral to this projects success. Stress this to your friends and ensure them that that their donation is going to a great cause and a great group of dreamers.
