The Occidental slam team is a group of five students that qualified for the Oxy slam team in Nov. 2012, and who have been training to perform and compete at the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational (CUPSI) in April. The competition is an annual one that invites college students from all over the country to connect, write, and perform poetry with each other; this year, Barnard College in New York is hosting the competition, and we need to raise money so that we can be a part of this amazing event!
"What's a slam?", you say? A poetry slam is a competitive poetry competition started in the 80s by March "So What" Smith in Chicago. At poetry slams, poets get up in front of an audience, perform their original 3-minute-long poems without the help of props or music, and get scored Olympic-style (on a scale of 1 to 10) by five judges, who are usually randomly selected from the audience. The audience is encouraged to respond, and slams often end up being a magical combination of church and comedy club, where poets share intimate secrets and stories that help individuals come together and connect as a community.

What We Need & What You Get
Between the costs of airfare and lodging, our five poets (plus our amazing student coach) will need to raise about $2,000 in total. You can help!
A $5 donation gets you a candy gram to you or the sweetheart of your choice with an original haiku attached. (We can mail these if you're long-distance!)
A $10 donation gets you a hard copy of an Oxy poem performed at CUPSI, plus a signed picture of the team.
A $50 donation gets you a hard copy of an Oxy poem, a program from CUPSI 2013, plus a signed picture of the team.
A $100 donation gets you a souvenir from NYC, a hard copy of an Oxy poem, a program from CUPSI 2013, plus a signed picture of the team.
A $200 donation gets you an original group poem written in your honor (with a hard copy and recorded version), a souvenir from NYC, a hard copy of an Oxy poem, a program from CUPSI 2013, plus a signed picture of the team.
CUPSI is an amazing, life-changing experience and if we go, we will be improved as artists and as human beings. In addition, we will be able to take critical concepts that we learn there (about social justice, identity, and community) and bring it back to the Oxy campus, thus benefitting all students that attend our school.
Last year, we beat teams such as Harvard and Dartmouth -- help us prove our mettle again this year!
