Cold Beans is a light-hearted 15-20 minute comedy drama telling the story of two brothers
with conflicting personalities, Joe and Alfie, who are forced into each other’s company
whilst evading the police in Sheffield.
The Film & Characters
When Joe, a carefree, irresponsible young man who is forced into looking after his younger brother, Alfie, is provoked into punching a friend on a night out, he must avoid the police at all costs and keep his brother safe. But when the police start to become suspicious, Joe must reveal his secret to Alfie, testing their relationship, as well as his integrity, in spite of the fact that it could get him in to deep trouble with the law and also ruin his chances with a potential girlfriend.
Joe, 20: An irresponsible guy who lacks the motivation to make something of himself. He is a typical young adult who tends to grunt a lot, go out with his friends and likes a good flirt with the ladies. He and his brother are like chalk and cheese; he doesn’t like the fact that Alfie is more intelligent than him so he resorts to mocking and taunting him in order to make him feel superior.
Alfie, 14: A responsible teenager who is older than his years. He’s a bit of a whizz kid who likes to lose himself in Dickens novels – especially David Copperfield. He worries about his Mum and tries to be the man of the house because he feels like Joe isn’t up for the job. He takes Joe’s taunts on the chin because he is confident with his personality.
Amelia, 20: A quizmaster and barmaid, she is taking a gap year to earn money in order to be able to afford to go to university. She is intelligent but a bit stuck up, flirtatious and likes to play hard to get with the boys.

Why do we need your money?
Over the last couple of months, our team has been dedicated in creating this story and vigorously developing it to the extent that we have fallen in love with these characters and the journey they go on.
Although we have all delved into our savings to contribute as much as possible towards funding this project, we really need your help to push it that little bit further.
We have drawn together as low a budget as possible, but filmmaking can be a pricey business. While financial help doesn’t necessarily make a good film, it definitely facilitates the making of one. Here are a few things we couldn’t do without your help:
Search far and wide for the best possible UK actors to
fill our vital principle roles.
Shoot on location in Sheffield for the duration of
filming. Never mind staying there, we
couldn’t even get there - we don’t
have the vehicle or the insurance to transport our extensive haul of top of the
range equipment, without your help.
Distribute the finished film widely to ensure the
largest possible audience for your money.
Your generosity will also contribute towards food and accommodation for our committed, cold, hungry cast and crew, as well as securing locations, and the many other administrative costs of putting together a production like this.
Every penny put towards this project will make a difference towards how it translates on screen, and we truly appreciate any amount you would be willing to donate.
Who are we?
We’re passionate filmmakers, of course! Yes we are students, but we don’t want you to get bogged down with this. You either have a good story or you don’t, whether you are a student or not. We truly believe we have a great story!
Who are we?
We come from a range of places and backgrounds, from Italy to Hong Kong, and we are all in our final year at the University of York’s Department of Theatre, Film and Television. As well as our multicultural advantage, we otherwise possess a strong core of Yorkshire men and women to portray Sheffield honestly, knowledgeably and sensitively.
This is our big, final year project, and we couldn’t be happier about this story we have decided to tell together. We think it’s great! We hope you do too, and if you are kind and generous enough to support this project, we promise to deliver a top quality film for you to enjoy.

A: You will have to wait and see!
Q: What’s the next step?
A: We are currently in the casting stage, as well as extensively planning our shooting days. We will be announcing decisions as they happen, so stay tuned for updates!
Q: Why should I back you?
A: The BSc in Film & Television Production at the University of York has quickly garnered praise from many areas of ‘the industry’ with its comprehensive and highly vocational nature. We have had two years of teaching on all aspects of production in film, and have already Written, Produced and Directed a film each! Any mistakes we may have made have been learnt from.
