What is the problem?
How we are going to fix it:
We're starting off with a pilot program of 20 high-school kids in Medellin, Colombia. For two months, they'll take an interactive course with instructors who share our vision, and apply everything they learn each day toward developing a website or application they will present at the end of the program.
Participants are going to be challenged to stretch their limits of creativity, learning with each other and learning to learn. In addition to simulating real live situations, they will also get face time with successful and passionate tech entrepreneurs and programmers that will share mind-opening stories of both success and hardship.
Where your contributions will go:
Travel costs for inspirational tech entrepreneurs and programmers to visit us.
Meals and transportation for participants - keeping it accessible to everyone.
Program costs including material for daily courses and visits to local tech initiatives - anything from Barcamps and DemoDays to Meetups in Medellin.
Program Evaluation to make sure we evaluate what works and what doesn't, in order to continue improving.
More about what Coderise will doWe have a hunch that by creating a space where kids gain the tools and connections necessary to launch into the field of programming web applications, in the long run -- kids are going to be inspired to use their creativity for anything from creating great products, to solving local community issues through technology to taking charge of their destiny.
*Will students become professional software programmers at the end of the program?
Probably not. Rather, our goal will be to ensure students achieve the basics to create a simple but quality website. And more importantly, we hope to give them the exposure to be one step closer to discovering what they would really like to do - whether it is coding for the web or something else.
We are eager to share with you where each dollar we raise goes in Coderise. To follow our progress on the program once it begins, please visit our homepage Coderise.org and join our mailing list. This way, you will receive our first newsletter breaking down all our donations and where they will go!
