UPDATE: Snakehead video under the Update tab!!
You will want to watch this movie if you…
…are or have considered becoming vegetarian but still want to eat meat.
…are inspired by people who might jump out of a running car every now and then.
…have a soft spot for genuine love stories.
Having always struggled with meateater’s guilt, and contemplated becoming a vegetarian at numerous times, I decided to shadow Jackson Landers: a born and raised vegetarian turned self-taught hunter. He introduced me not only to the enriching aspects of hunting for food, but the ethical and health benefits as well.
After only eight years as a self-taught hunter, he has become one of the most prominent leaders in promoting hunting to adult beginners. As a published author, he has written two books and has been highlighted in the New York Times on several occasions for his expertise in his field. Recently, he has branched out to battle various invasive species (such as Canada geese, iguana, lionfish, feral hogs, etc.) through a very simple strategy: by hunting and eating them.
Close to the Bone examines all aspects of Jackson’s pioneering and - at times - controversial work. The film depicts a person who thanks the deer at the end of a hunt, beckons Canada geese using his own call, and jumps out of a running car to chase down wild pigs by foot.
Through the course of the film, it also tells the story of how I eventually fell in love with this crazy man. Imagine if you had actually recorded the day you met your significant other and the weeks to follow when the two of you fell in love? Well I did.
This started out as a “quick-and-easy” topic for my Master’s Thesis in film school, but the story took a path of its own and changed into something incredibly dear to me. I did not plan to include myself in this film, but in the end, it was inevitable.
This film was shot in the fall of 2011 and now all it needs is a talented musical composer and a dexterous editor to string it together into the magnificent film it will be. This is where you come in. In order to make this happen, I need your help! As you can see to the right, I offer some quite exciting incentives for those who would like to support this passion project. There will also be a few surprises throughout this campaign!
Help me to complete this project that began as just another thesis film and became a life-changing experience.
