Hello, I'm Gints. I live in Latvia. I'm a filmmaker, animator and a cinephile. The films I make are completely personal, non-commercial and labors of love. Supporting this campaign you would not only help one film, but would give me the tools to make many more.
About the film
Clarity is a live-action/animation short film. The story is about a girl who lives in the forest. A mysterious wounded boy is chased by a giant monster. The girl must decide to help the boy or help herself... Or help the monster...
How it started
Earlier this year I finished my previous film. You can view it here to get a taste of my filmmaking style
Aqua - https://vimeo.com/36338055
The great response that it got, was so motivating that I started working on my next film immediately after finishing Aqua. I wanted to try some something I had not done before. So I set out to make a live action film, but to treat it as if I was making an animated film. What I love about animation is that the filmmaker is in complete control of everything. Every little detail needs to be thought out. Every decision is motivated. Why would this be better suited for live-action rather than animation? One reason is because it would allow me create camera moves that would not work in animation. Sometimes I felt very constrained by the flat two dimensional painted backgrounds. The spirit of this movie requires the dynamics real world provides. Secondly, there is an amazing location very near where I live. It has a magical quality to it that fits perfectly to the atmosphere I’m looking for. Why recreate it when it's already done?
And for those who liked the animation in Aqua I can say that I'm not giving up animation. There will still be a very important character that's animated. In the pitch video there is a quick test of this technique. It is a very rough version, done in a single day, the final result will be much more polished. The story, I feel, is very special. I haven't seen something like this before. Since I started making Aqua two years ago I've learned so much. I can assure you that this will be a great improvement in storytelling.
For the last couple of months I've been working day and night in pre-production. Writing script, sketching, painting, rewriting, location scouting, casting, designing costumes, testing, animating, doing technical research and now marketing. The time has come to open up to the world a little bit and ask for its help. I'm almost ready to start shooting, but first I need to get some things.
Why do I need your support
If this project turns out successful, the money would be spent on:
Camera - Canon 5D Mark II
Lens - Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
Filter - Tiffen Pro-Mist 1
Sound gear - Two microphones and a sound recorder.
Memory cards and batteries for the camera
Hard drive to store all of the footage.
And also bits and pieces for equipment I'm making myself - Light reflectors, camera stabilizer and shoulder rig.
All of the team is working for free.
Other ways you could help
If you want to help but can not afford to send me any money, please share this on twitter, facebook or anything else. It could help even more than money.
What happens now
I'll update this page regularly with exclusive concept art and progress of the film. Check out the campaign's gallery. So if you are interested come back here once in a while.
If the campaign doesn't reach the goal, and you have contributed, don't worry, you will receive all of the rewards. I will find a way to finish the film some way. And if it is successful, then I’ll be able to make it right now and it would reach audiences as early as this fall.
