My name is Macklin Kowal. I’m an artist based in Brooklyn, NY, originally from San Francisco, CA. You can check out my work here.
I need your help to get to Vienna this summer for an amazing opportunity –
the danceWEB scholarship program at ImPulsTanz Dance Festival!
I am a dancer, choreographer, and student.
As a dancer, my training and experience have been quite diverse. I spent several years studying kathak (classical dance of North India) and flamenco. From these forms I gained a deep appreciation for direction, action, and pace as guiding principles in dance. I’ve studied improvisation with a number of teachers and mentors working within and around different idioms of contemporary dance. These experiences have intensified my commitment to heeding and also questioning intuition as a principle tactics of research.
As a choreographer, I operate at the confluence of the several perspectives and approaches that I have been fortunate to experience. I make dance and performance that explores the confounding allure and repulsion with which we approach abject, uncanny, and disorienting experience. I approach my craft with an utmost reverence for dancing bodies as potent forces of volatility and grace.
As a student, I am one month away from finishing graduate school. My research has offered me many new perspectives on the constitution and performativity of art, politics, bodies, time, and space. My graduate work has enriched my artistic practice greatly. I’m excited to continue my work as both a creator and theorist of art.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:
My practice as an artist is situated within a vibrant network, which consists of my communities in San Francisco and New York. This summer I have an incredible opportunity to expand the scope of my network to an international scale. And I need your help to make it happen!
I’ve been accepted into danceWEB!
danceWEB is a highly competitive and esteemed opportunity in the field of contemporary performance. It is a scholarship program framed within the context of ImPulsTanz International Dance Festival in Vienna – Europe’s largest festival of contemporary dance. Every summer, danceWEB accepts approximately 60 young dancers to participate in a comprehensive and immersive training program in close conjunction with the festival. The program lasts for the entire duration of the festival – five weeks. This is a thrilling and distinct opportunity to spend time in a vital center of contemporary dance, working in close exchange with peers and mentors from around the world.
1071 people from around the world applied this year. 66 of us have been accepted. And I am 1 of 5 Americans to be invited.
As participants in danceWEB, we are offered the following opportunities:
• individual coaching by the danceWEB mentor Ivo Dimchev (BG)
• participation in the research projects of ImPulsTanz 2013 (approx. 15 ProSeries & CoachingProjects)
• participation in the technique workshops of ImPulsTanz 2013 (approx. 200 workshops by 120 teachers)
• admission to all productions of ImPulsTanz 2013
• access to dance film videos, documentations and dance film productions of artists and companies who perform at ImPulsTanz
• exchange of ideas and contact with international teachers and choreographers of ImPulsTanz 2013
• special projects exclusively offered to the danceWEB scholarship holders 2013
• representation in the yearly growing, international danceWEB-database at www.jardindeurope.eu
• lecture demonstrations & talks
• accommodation in Vienna for the entire period of the Scholarship Programme (5 weeks)
This is an enormously generous package! I will literally be taking more dance classes over the course of these five weeks than I have ever taken in my life. I will also get to train and study with some incredible artists whose work I have been following closely for years.
What’s particularly significant is how this experience stands to connect me to broader networks of mentors and peers. Every year danceWEB designates a different mentor artist to work with the program’s participants. This year, Ivo Dimchev will hold that position. I have long admired Ivo’s work, and I thrilled to be able to work with him in this way. Furthermore, danceWEB will connect me to a diverse network of international peers. I will be working closely with my fellow danceWEBers (as we are affectionately called), exchanging ideas and making new work together.
danceWEB aims to engender a spirit of collaboration and a network across borders. Its participants form a community of diverse artistic practice, research, and experimentation.
As a participating artist, I stand to amass a great deal of experience and education in my collaborative endeavors this summer. This comes at such a ripe moment in my career as an artist. I am thrilled and honored to be able to share my perspectives as an artist coming from San Francisco and Brooklyn. And, I am so excited to be able to return and share these new modes of working and new personal connections with my communities in the United States.
“WHY RAISE MONEY IF YOU’VE ALREADY BEEN AWARDED THE SCHOLARSHIP?”
danceWEB is funded in large part by a number of European cultural organizations. These various councils are able to cover 2/3 of the associated costs for every danceWEB participant. We are each personally responsible for raising the remaining 1/3 of costs. This is amount is 2185 Euros, which is equivalent to $2838 as of 4/8/13).
A great deal of time and work goes into making this program possible. $2838 will cover time spent by the many artists and organizers who continue to commit to the notion that art is a vital and important practice to cultivate and encourage. I am turning to my community of fellow artists, researchers, critics, and enthusiasts in the world in order to make this experience possible.
Here is an overview of my expenses:
1/3 Associated Costs = $2838
Peak Season Airfare = $1290
Food for five weeks = $ 1050 (not included in scholarship)
TOTAL : $5178
My goal with this campaign is raise $3000* in order to cover the 1/3 of Associated Costs of the danceWEB scholarship. I must deliver this amount by June 1, or I will be unable to attend. I have been saving for the remaining expenses for my own budget (international flights nd meals for five weeks) but could certainly use your help in covering those expenses as well!
*I’m asking for the additional $162 to cover international wirting fees (which are costly) and any significant fluctuation in the conversion rate between now and then.
“WHAT DO I GET FOR GIVING?”
As I mentioned earlier, I will be able to return from Vienna with a wealth of information to share with my communities in the US. These will include techniques learned in dance classes, stylistic or dramaturgical approaches gleaned in choreography workshops, personal connections to the many friends and colleagues I am bound to connect with… All of this I will share with my communities here. That said, any investment that you make in my work this summer is going directly back into my art communities in San Francisco and Brooklyn. These are the places and people that nurture me as an artist and as an individual, and I am committed to seeing them grow and change in exciting ways. Whatever part I can play in that process is thrilling to me, and I see danceWEB as a great opportunity to bring new perspectives into SF and BK.
“…But what are you going to give me that I can touch and feel?”
Also a good question!
You will get the gift of art. In exchange for you generosity, I am excited to offer my creative efforts for you to own. In addition to making performance, I enjoy making visual art. By giving, you will get to expand your personal collection of art.
