IN CASE YOU DON'T READ FURTHER, THIS IS WHERE YOU CAN ORDER THE BOOK (print copy starting at the $15 giving level). THANKS FOR READING THIS MUCH!
Hello! And, Namaste. You’re undoubtedly here for a reason, and we thank you. You may be here because you love our idea of creating a children’s board book series that promotes greater cultural awareness and openness, starting with India. You may also like the fact that we’re trying to give back to some amazing young leaders in India. You may also be here because you assumed, based on the 2Lokas name or something else and totally random (it happens), that we’re offering some super-cool, human-sized gadget that will beam you up to an otherworldly place, and back, in 3.74 minutes. Or, simply, that we’re just two crazy ladies.
In any case, we believe you may also be reading this because you share our larger vision of building connections in the work that we do, and cultivating “youthfulness” throughout the world. And, by youthful we don’t mean age. Age is just a number, an arbitrary numerical assignment. By youthful, we mean the curiosity, the openness, the fun and fearlessness that we associate with being young - that we see and admire in our own little ones. We could certainly use more of that in the world and we truly believe it’s in all of us, perhaps hidden or forgotten, but it’s there. So, by investing in our first board book, you’re also investing in our shared vision. Thats right, now you’re a part of this vision, so jump up, jump down, and get excited!
Of course, for those of you who are wondering what on earth we’re talking about, don’t worry, we’re going to take a turn for the tangible and concrete with bullet points, photos, infographics, and more. Starting...now.
Your contribution to this campaign will not only be forever appreciated, but it will also:
Help us launch The Little Loka™ Series with our first children’s board book - “Maya and Leela Present: Dances of India.”
Allow us to pay it forward to the country we’re writing about (India!) and financially support young social entrepreneurs effecting social change in their communities. We’ll also be donating books here in the U.S. as part of our philanthropic efforts.
Enable us to build a business model that fully integrates social values, forges connections among people from varying backgrounds, and promotes the shared vision we mentioned above.
You’re probably also interested in who we are, and possibly even in how this whole thing came about. Well, we’re two professionals, two mothers, two college tennis buddies, two lo(c)kas. We noticed a dearth of books aimed at the youngest readers (ages 0-4) that reflected the rich cultural diversity around us - both in the United States and around the globe. Thus, our book project, with a social twist, was born! We believe it’s never too early, or too late for that matter, to open up to and better understand the world. And, 2Lokas (the venture we started) and this book project are part of our own effort to create a meaningful and successful social enterprise model for ourselves and for others.
That’s essentially it! Feel free to scroll down for additional details on the campaign including: where specifically your money will go, awesome perks, and our hopefully not too lofty monetary goals. Even if you’re not particularly interested in getting your hands on a book (you can always get a gift for someone or we can donate one or many books on your behalf - clearly, the options are abound!), we still invite you to consider contributing to this journey of ours. Likewise, if you’re in the Washington, D.C. area, think about coming out to our Book Preview shin-dig on November 17th, which may or may not involve some form of Indian dance (so get ready to Free Your Dance!). Check back for updates on this!
Anyway, we understand that there are many cyber places and spaces you could be frequenting right now. But, you’re here with us. And, we thank you for that.
Kyra + Malini
Express. Engage. Empower.
Book Launch: Your contributions will help us cover all aspects of the production of 500 print copies of the board book (board books are more expensive to print) plus the development and launch of an interactive digital version. The costs include: publishing, editing, printing, packaging, design, illustrations, marketing, and ultimately distribution! And, if all goes well, your contributions will also help us launch the next book in The Little Loka™ India series. We are all about creating a sustainable model.
Seeding Tomorrow’s Leaders: Paying it forward was a mandatory part of our mission and business model. It made sense to us to focus our giving on India (the country we’re writing about) and on young social entrepreneurs dedicated to making a difference in their respective communities. We also realized early on that allocating a percentage of our profit was not ideal for us because there was no guarantee that this amount would be significant enough to make an impact. So, we decided to set aside a pre-determined pool of money for each young leader. We’ll make two payments to them over the course of one year. Thus, your contribution to our campaign will also help us fund the two amazing young leaders whom we’ve vetted and selected - Sumeet Gade and Aarti Naik. Both began their social ventures when they were only 20 years-old and amidst their own challenging circumstances. Sumeet started Pragati, a program to promote the recovery of children in hospitals. Aarti began SAKHI for Girls Education, an initiative aimed at promoting education for girls within slums. For more information on the pre-selected projects and their amazing founders, feel free to visit the Tomorrow’s Leaders page on our website.
Book Donations: Although the focus of our books, and our venture in general, is global in nature, we’d like to support communities within the United States as well. We live in a pretty special place, indeed. And, there clearly is a need for our support here, particularly given the increasingly diverse country we live in. Our plan is to donate Little Loka™ books to communities in need - via libraries, Head Start programs, etc. We feel that this will be a wonderful way to not only support more traditional education and literacy efforts targeting young children, but to foster a greater understanding of the cultural similarities and differences among us all as well.
Perks: And...finally! As much as we’d love to be able to provide the perks we’re offering through the various tiers for free, our budget just won’t allow it. Le grand sigh. Anyway, the good news, because there’s always good news, many of our perks will be 100% handmade and/or personalized with the help of our in-house artist and illustrator extraordinaire who has an eye for creative merch and product design. Not to mention, she’s clearly quite talented when it comes to artistic endeavors. There are also some fabulous organizations that have agreed to lend a hand by subsidizing their work so we can offer specific perks to you! So, we’ve built the cost of design, printing, and production into our goal total. And, if you absolutely love something and want more of it or if you’re interested in additional items we might offer, we’ll also be selling items separately through our online storefront.
LET'S SURPASS $25,000!
ACCOUNTABILITY = AWESOMEWe’re known to geek out to cool visuals, so, rather than try to explain where each of the estimated dollar amounts is going, we figured we’d provide an infographic in the form of a flow-chart instead.
As mentioned above, we'll be providing some pretty fabulous perks, many of which will feature original images by our illustrator! Most are fairly self-explanatory, so we'll spare you the lengthy rambling, which we've clearly perfected, ha! Anyway, below is a little sneak peek. Oh, and just a note - the estimated delivery date is the end of February for most of the tiers. However, we know that the holidays are coming up, and what better gift to give someone who's got little ones running around than a board book? Thus, if you're interested in getting a super early bird copy of a book, just let us know; we can certainly do our best to expedite the process!
And, on that note, here are some of the perks.
The not-just-a-bookmark bookmark!
Beautifully handmade dandiya sticks!
Original design for either a t-shirt or tote!
Our book! (Note: Image a mock-up)
Additional perks that our illustrator has helped design include:
- Specially designed postcard from Leela
- Interactive eBook
- Handmade book-inspired charm
- Dances of India themed wallpaper for your phone, laptop, or iPad
- Dances of India themed original poster
- Portrait of you or your child (if you have one :) as an Indian animal
- Painting of you or your child (if you have one :) with Maya and Leela
- Original print (selection of 5 designs that we'll share with you if you choose this option!)
And, finally, we'd like to give a round, or several, of shout-outs to a handful of people who've very kindly offered to help us fulfill many of these perks, in addition to our illustrator:
Handmade dandiya sticks by Hasta - The Creative Hand
- Personal dance class or choreogoraphy session contributed by Rhythmaya Dance
- Tickets to Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh Dance Company's signature Fall Festival (DC-based, 2014)
