"Kids go into the woods in search of a legend
and become part of one"
When was the last time you were afraid? I mean really afraid? Was it walking alone in the dark on a strange road? Perhaps it was hearing an unnerving sound cut the silence of still night? What makes these situations terrifying, is it the circumstances or is it a built in fear passed down through stories told by our ancestors?
Horror stories have been with us since the very beginning of time. They were told in an effort to make us aware of the danger of the outside world as well as a way of dealing with our own mortality, but in the end these were always just stories and we knew that stories could never really harm us.
Blackwater RD. is about discovering how wrong we were.
“A horror story”.
Blackwater RD. is a psychological horror film about a research trip into the backwoods which soon becomes a haunting descent into terror when a group of grad students writing a sequel to a popular folklore guide fall under attack by an infamous local legend. As they attempt to escape they begin to realize that perhaps their choices are not their own. In the end the last survivors must fight fate and resist becoming part of the Blackwater legend.
"Like The Shining...but in the woods"
Blackwater RD. was developed by Writer/Director Michael E Stephenson while attending the University of Central Florida's Master of Fine Arts program in digital filmmaking. This is a unique study as filmmakers create orginal feature length works that adhere to the ultra-low budget digital model. UCF Film's motto of "Independent, Microbudget, Cinema" imbodies many of the films that the MFA student body hopes to produce. Blackwater Rd. is no exception, but the path of Blackwater started much earlier than that.
Michael E Stephenson has always had a love for horror films. At a young age he would sneak down to watch classic creature features and rent every horror VHS he could find. At the age of 7, after seeing Ghostbusters for the first time, he decided that filmmaking is what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. As the years went by he become a sponge of pop and horror culture, so much so that he began noticing trends and themes in all the amassed works. These were the building blocks of the backbone of a horrific story but it wasn't till a fateful trip to the real life Blackwater RD., and its own colorful past, that the pieces began to come togther.
"Blackwater RD. is the child of tall tales and fright films that I grew up with. Everything that appears in the script came from absorbing all these different elements and trying to find reason in them. That's what scares me the most: a universe without reason."
- Michael E Stephenson
An major element to UCF's MFA Film thesis is that the school cannot assist in any funding of the films in any matter. This is designed to allow filmmakers to use their entrepreneurial spirit and develop their own budgets. With the rise of crowd funding independent filmmakers have been given more power by the community but there is still a battle to be fought.

While we have set the goal at $14,000 this still does not cover the full budget of the film (although it certainly helps). With your help we feel that not only can we meet this goal we can go beyond it. Every dollar that is donated goes to fund the dreams of many.
