Director Mark Teitelman and writer/producer Sandra Ann Miller are excited to bring their feature film, BLACK COFFEE, to the Indiegogo community.
Mark has worked extensively for ESPN and the NFL Network, producing live events (Thursday night football, the ESPY Awards, and the international broadcast of the Super Bowl), and popular shorts (ESPN and Funny or Die). As a director, Mark has worked with Samuel L. Jackson, Dennis Hopper, Ron Howard, Harrison Ford, Don Cheadle, Vince Vaughn, Jack Black, Seth Meyers and Justin Timberlake, to name a few.
Sandra has written several screenplays and a book, A Sassy Little Guide to Getting Over Him. She has worked with top executives and A-list celebrities as an executive assistant, and would say more except for those pesky confidentiality agreements.
Black Coffee will be Mark and Sandra’s first feature film.
WHAT IS BLACK COFFEE?
Black Coffee is a dark comedy set in Hollywood, based on actual events. Really. It’s the story of Nina Thomas, who lands her dream job only to find she is working with a jerk. Been there, right? Nina gets the gig of second assistant to studio president, Dawn Majors; this job is a career-maker. All she has to do is put in a year, and she can have any job she wants. Unfortunately, the first assistant, Signey Schultz, is a complete control-freak-power-hungry nightmare. Nina’s only salvation is Jerry, the long-suffering third assistant. He has Nina’s back. And, eventually, her front. Now, we could go into all the plot points to further entice you, but we want you to actually be surprised at the twists and turns when this dark comedy turns into a whodunit. Yes, someone’s clogs get popped—perhaps more than one someone—and don’t you want to be surprised at who and why?
WHY SHOULD YOU BACK BLACK COFFEE?
Beside this being your chance to be an independent movie mogul and greenlight a smart, fun, twisted dark comedy, there are two key reasons you should participate in the Black Coffee project:
1. You have worked with a jerk, probably more than one, and it will be highly cathartic to help make a film in which you can live vicariously (still not going to give away the plot points, but this should be a hint). Give for every jerk you’ve worked with, for every asshat who made your day longer than it needed to be, for every douche-canoe who thought they were senior to you because they were hired five minutes before you were. Give to get back at them in a really, really fantastically passive-aggressive way. It’s sort of the internet version of busting out of your cubicle a la OFFICE SPACE.
2. (And this is the most important reason.) You have said time and again that there aren’t any movies you want to see. You’ve had enough of remakes and 3-D movies aimed at 13-year-olds. Not that there’s anything wrong with those films; it’s just that you would like a little variety, something smart that will make you laugh, think, and have to talk about it with your friends. This is your chance to greenlight a movie you would actually like to see. This is your opportunity to let Hollywood know the kinds of films you would see.
We are looking to you—friends and family, friends of friends, colleagues of family, perfect strangers who have somehow made your way here—to back our movie completely. We are turning to the movie-going public to help us raise $1,500,000 in 45 days.
For that, we not only need your generous contribution, we need you to spread the word to your friends and family and colleagues, and even a few random acquaintances. Spread the word! One-point-five-million a huge amount of money to raise on the internet, we know. But, we believe you are ready to be bold along with us. Or, you just really want to get back at that jerk. Either way, we’ll take it. What we are asking for is 150,000 people to give us $10. Of course, if you want to contribute more, we won't stop you.
WHAT WE ARE REALLY TRYING TO DO
We are asking for your participation because, while we've had interest from other parties, these offers come with contingencies we believe hinder the film. We want the best cast we can get without having to consider the actors' foreign value. We want to make the film in Los Angeles and pass up the tax rebates other states offer because the film is set in Hollywood, and we want to support our local film community. We want to make a smart movie that some people believe isn't marketable because: 1) It's set in Hollywood (and some people think you won’t like that) and 2) It’s a dark comedy (and some people think you don't like those). Like 9 to 5, Office Space, Swimming with Sharks, The Player, The War of the Roses or even The Devil Wears Prada, our film is about trying to fix an uncomfortable situation...and the missteps ensue.
As a backer of BLACK COFFEE, you are not only making a significant contribution to helping us make our movie, your are giving a voice to every film-goer who desires a variety of film genres at the theatre. Thanks for that.
What happens if we raise more than $1,500,000? We will be beyond thrilled. Our production value and schedule will increase. You’ll see every dime on the screen. What happens if we don’t raise our goal? We truly hope we will, or at least get very close to it. If we do fall short, we will use the funds we do raise and go for bridge and/or gap loans to acquire the rest of the funds and begin securing cast.
We will immediately go to casting once we receive the funds in late October. The cast will be comprised of name actors, many of whom we believe you are big fans of. In January, we will go into pre-production and shoot the film in March, per Mark’s schedule. Post-production will take place in April, then we will go into festivals and seek distribution and a theatrical release. Perks will be sent out once the film is released; DVDs will be released after theatrical runs and per distributor timelines. We don’t know exactly when that will be but we will be keeping you informed with monthly updates and inside scoop throughout casting, pre-production, filming, post-production, premieres and DVD release. You will be part of the process, because you are part of the Black Coffee crew.
All contributors will receive a Thank You credit on the film’s website, if the contributor so desires. You can also “dedicate” your contribution in the name of the “jerk” you worked with (first name and last initial only). Perks will be released once the film is released; DVDs will be released after theatrical runs and distributor timelines. We don’t know exactly when that will be but we will be keeping you informed with monthly updates and inside scoop throughout casting, pre-production, filming, post-production, premieres and DVD release. We will be having Google+ hangouts so that our contributors can meet us, ask questions and learn what the latest is on the project.
