My name is Amanda and I am currently a university student, majoring in economics and political science. I need something else to do with my time in addition to school, and I'd like a way to get a headstart on my future goal to own my own shop. I'm looking for your help in starting up my e-shop.
I love to mix flavors...ice cream, soda, tea; you name it, I want to mix it up. I thought about making cold process soap, but decided to start with lip balm instead. I could easily just make lip balm on my own, but I would also like to expand to solid perfume (like lip balm but with fragrance oils). If I actually reach $500, this could even move into home fragrances.
I plan to sell my products online, most likely using Etsy as it seems best for my concept (although oversaturated), but with your help I may also be able to attend a craft fair or two as a vendor in 2013 if I have enough products.
Why the name Black Bear Laboratory? I just thought it fit. I can't even explain it. When I told the people who know me best, their responses were all a simple yes. I love bears, and I feel like an evil scientist when I scroll through pages of fragrance oils.
If you donate to my campaign, your money will not be wasted. The ideas I have especially involving fragrance oils are pretty awesome, but require quite a bit of oil sourcing. Shipping isn't cheap on the stuff either! I currently only have enough supplies for about 100 tubes of lip balm, so your contributions will help greatly. Also, indiegogo makes your minimum $500, so I will probably be set for life with your help. This project will be funded no matter what.
Now you may be asking yourself, there are a billion sellers of lip balm on Etsy, what exactly makes you different?
Let's break it down. If you want the short version: I'm making flavors you aren't going to find there currently.
Lip balms - I'm using candelilla wax instead of beeswax, but I am not going to make any claims as to them being vegan. Lip balms typically require sweetener for the right pop, and I have chosen a stevia infused oil for the job. They will be labeled with all necessary information as required and shrinkwrapped.
Currently my base will include previously mentioned wax, shea butter, along with some combination of coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil, and vitamin E oil. A variety of oils helps a lip balm achieve a nice shine. Vitamin E adds antioxidants and can help prevent oil spoilage. We're talking natural lip balm that's going to have 8 ingredients max, so it can't last forever. And it shouldn't last forever, it should be on your lips!
With what I have already ordered, I have decided on the following flavors to start: Cheesecake French Toast, Red Velvet Cupcake, Mango Lassi Cheesecake, Matcha Cotton Candy, Pumpkin Chai, and S'Mores.
Definites with funding will include Watermelon Margarita, Strawberry Lemon Cheesecake, Peach Sangria, Mango Buttercream, Cherry Colada, Coconut Mocha, and Bavarian Cream Filled Donut.
Please note that other than any substance's natural ability to provide sun protection, these lip balms will not protect your lips from the sun.
Solid Perfume - For the uninitiated, solid perfume is somewhat like lip balm (same kind of base), except you use fragrance oils. Fragrance oils don't go on your lips, obviously. There are more possibilities with fragrance oils too. Some current ideas include Raspberry Porter, Cherry Cola, Earl Grey, and Fruit Smoothie...I would also like to get a bit crazy with something like a mix of French Toast, Maple Syrup, a hint of Bacon and Black Coffee... Packaging/labeling as above applies here too. I haven't decided yet to use the same type of stick as lip balm, or a more stout shape twist tube.
You'll be helping me buy shipping supplies, packaging, more flavors, the ability to expand on a selection of oils I can use in the products, etc. Packaging is probably the biggest cost, given each tube will be filled, given a waterproof label, and shrinkwrapped one at a time, all by hand.
So what do you really get out of this? Products of course. The more you give, the more you get. Once funding occurs, and I have a general idea of what I am offering, you, my fine friend, will get your choice in products. I will offer my initial flavors on Etsy, but the list of definites will be available to those who fund the project first. All solid perfumes will also be available to you before they are sold anywhere else.
Obviously when the funding ends, I will know what flavors will be offered. The ones above are definitely happening, and more will likely be added. Once I have all my supplies I will get started on rewards, of course!
