A vividly intimate portrait of an area and it's people, riddled with complexity, but painted with simplicity. This is a story of the human condition.

Big Moccasin is documentary film that was shot in a small town called Nickelsville, tucked away deep in the Appalachian Mountains in Southwest Virginia. It is the project of Chelsea Brodsky and Andrew Moynehan, duo NYC based filmmakers. The film explores the meaning of life in the mountains- the varied perspectives of individual characters and the universal, unified knowledge, and love for the mountain way of life. Big Moccasin was filmed mainly, but not exclusively, on Big Moccasin Road: a 25 mile stretch of pavement that encompasses some of the valley's most glorious views and intriguing people.

The film took shape as a character study, looking at the lives of six people, all of which are completely different from one another. A lot of time was spent with each of the characters, and with each person, a unique relationship was formed. We also looked at the history of the region, the mountain arts, and the spirituality and belief of the people. Music, taxidermy, blacksmithing, and hunting are amongst some of the crafts that we observed. We learned a lot about living on a little, and we learned that the best way to live is with what the earth gives us. Mountain life still relies heavily on self sufficieny, and old time ways of living. The knowledge of survival is very important to the people of this region. The religious views of the area are very strong and dictate the life choices, the politics, and the relationships of it's people.

We made this film with the intent of preserving the ways of mountain life, a dwindling lifestyle that is fading fast with the younger generations. We wanted to explore a life that existed so differently than what we were accustomed to, and absorb all of it's intricacies-for better or for worse. This is a land that has been untouched by the modern world, a pure and untainted culture that survives on canning and hunting. We hope to create a vividly intimate portrait of an area and it's people riddled with complexity, but painted with simplicity. This is a story of the human condition.

What is crowdfunding?

Making a feature film costs a lot of money and, up until this point, we have saved and completely self-funded this project. Crowdfunding enables us to raise small amounts of money from many people like you, enabling us to bring this film to life. We simply can't do it without your help.

What do your contributions go towards?

Unfortunately, the first time around, both our time and savings were stretched to the limit. Part of this budget would enable us to revisit Nickelsville and round off some of the things we were unable to do first time around.

Exploring and editing the footage. We have tons of footage and we need to organize and edit this. The journey took us on lots of tangents and it is going to be an extremely intensive and time consuming process bringing it together. Once this is complete, we will require professional color correction, sound enhancement and much more to really do this story justice. This can be extremely costly and a large part of our budget will go to towards this.

A major part of life in the mountains is the music. It is really important for us to have an original score for this film, to weave together footage and bring the visuals to life. This entire project has been a collborative project with the people of Nickelsville and for us employing a local group to produce the score would really be the icing on the cake.

Although we're working on a modest total we really hope to that the remainder of this budget will go towards the marketing of the film, entering the film into film festivals, producing dvds and posters, having screenings etc. By doing so we'll have an international reach and get the film shown to as wide an audience as possible.

Can I contribute from outside the USA?
