Hi, my name is Teresa Carey. I am an artist and writer with a background in journalism who has made the bold move of starting her own magazine.
A lot of people like it. It has even been nominated for "Best New Magazine" in the 31st annual Western Magazine Awards.
With changes the newspaper industry has seen in recent years, I decided I wanted to pursue a different path, hence the magazine. In my work as a journalist, I came to know of so many interesting stories that "just needed to be told". I wanted to tell these stories as well as promote a positive, life-affirming vision of Manitoba's Interlake region that would include all of its peoples.
Interlake Arts, Life & Leisure Magazine was launched in May, 2012. It is now entering its second year of publication. It is part arts and culture, part history, and part tourism magazine, written with a general audience in mind.
Its purpose is to tell rich in human interest stories about Manitoba's Interlake people and places--to tell them in a way that everyday people can relate to, as well as to inspire tourists and locals alike to explore the vast and varied Interlake region.
One of the main mandates of this magazine is to foster an appreciation of culture and arts, and shine a light on the many talented people in the region. Therefore, each issue contains at least one artist profile (often more), as well as selections of poetry and prose by a number of exceptional Interlake writers.
I feel it is important to weave the arts into a larger format because, the reality is, the average person does not self-identify as being "artsy". Some will even put up blinders to the whole arts scene unless the stories can be told in such a way as to invite them in.
My background as, both, an artist and a reporter "on the street" has given me an interesting set of tools to pursue this vision.
What I Need & What You Will Get
It is really challenging to start up a magazine. What I need most of all at this point is to build my subscribers base significantly. This will ensure that advertisers place ads, the revenue of which covers printing and distribution costs.
What you will receive are 3 hard copies per year of Interlake Arts, Life & Leisure Magazine.
Your first subscription will be at the regular price. ($21.15 per year) Your renewals will be at 25% off for as long as you wish to continue receiving the magazine. (I will be setting up a special coupon code specifically for anyone helping me with this project).
If I am able to prove that I have sold (not just gave away) a minumum of 5,000 magazines in a year I will meet the threshold needed for me to apply for government grants. The grants are badly needed so that I may grow this magazine. I need to hire people to sell subscriptions and advertising. With this grant money, I will be able to do more advertising, plus I will be able to take more training to improve my design skills.
Without this grant money, I will hobble along. Maybe people will subscribe, but maybe not. Most of the people (95%) who have subscribed in year one did renew, so that is very hopeful. But at the current rate I am going on my own, I will not be able to meet my target.
If I cannot get my numbers up the advertisers who have put their trust in me based on my reputation as a journalist, may very well spend their advertising dollars elsewhere. It is a bit of a Catch 22. Besides, I have worked long hours on this with minimal pay.
Other Ways You Can Help:
Your help in spreading the word is also very much appreciated. While this magazine focusses on the Interlake region of Manitoba, the stories themselves are universal. Maybe you have a friend or loved one who would enjoy this magazine.
If you would like to contribute to this campaign, please enter a minumum of $21.15 CAD. You can also contribute $36.00 for a 2 year subscription or $47.65 for a 3 year subscription.
Thank you for your generous support!!!
