My name is Larry Longstreth. I just sold my first-ever feature film, "The Long, Slow Death of a Twenty-Something" (rent it at Blockbuster today!) and decided to get a little more serious about my next film. This documentary, titled "Before the World Goes BOOM", is my chance to take a look at the divides between America's people. Whether it's race, religion, politics or otherwise, American citizens seem to be polarized at the moment. This not only intrigues me, but it truly scares the hell out of me too.
So, in a way that was fun but very up-front and honest, I took the chance to sit down with a number of people from very different backgrounds across Ohio. Protesters, doctors, preachers, and more. But that's just the beginning. I want to do MORE. I want to hit Texas, LA, New York (We're going October 18th and have a meeting scheduled with Troma's Lloyd Kaufman among others), and even Washington DC. Trust me when I say that a conversation with a Texas republican followed by a conversation with a Detroit liberal really leaves your head spinning. It's hard to believe we're all from the same country... And yet we are.
So, the way I see it, we've got two options: Get our sh*t together and learn to live together...
or keep on fighting til the world "goes BOOM".
This isn't a liberal film or a conservative one. It's not a religious movement or one designed to attack it, either. It's just our attempt at making sense of so many different people with so many different points of view.
Here's the truth: I am going to finish this documentary one way or another. Our New York trip is already scheduled. The Ohio stuff is already finished (with a few final interviews next month). I'm going to make it happen no matter what, but how good it ends up being and how soon it ends up being finished depends on you guys.
We're gunning for 15k. That'll cover our flight costs, some food, some tapes, some equipment (if something happens to our own), and that's about it. It's a pretty low number. Without it, I can still make the film but trips to LA and Texas are out of the question. If we do this right and get it funded, I can make something that really means something to everybody. I'm not interested in manipulating peoples' words like so many documentaries do. This isn't a pro-right or pro-left propaganda piece. It's based on integrity and honest inquiry. At times it will be funny and even sarcastic, but I promise to stay on topic and straight-forward. It's gonna have heart.
Quite frankly, I'm worried about our world and I'm interested in finding out what's going on in America today. I know that a lot of you are, too. Help me do this right.
What We Need & What You Get
We're asking for 15k. That's SUPER low budget. (Blair Witch was made for 30k)
It will fund:
Most films have the filmmakers holing up in hotels and driving around in rentals. We will try as hard as possible to find friends and people to stay with and to keep driving to a minimum in the big cities. We WANT to do this for as cheap as possible. The real chunk of money will be used toward the end of the project, when marketing materials and the film's insurance policy must be covered. (I learned a lot this year when my last film was distributed and will be ready this time).
Other Ways You Can Help
Any and all help is welcome! We're filmmakers! We know what it's like to not have any money! But if you believe in a project you can still help! Spread the word (Facebook is the best way to do this) and help us get our project out there. Of course, pledging money is the best way to support us but it's not the only way.
Every little bit counts. (I hate that corny line).
