We are Sarah and Shannon, and at the end of September 2012 we will be returning to La Paz, BCS Mexico to volunteer and apply for English teaching positions at local schools.
During our first stay in La Paz from December 2011-June 2012, we volunteered at a local charity called Care for Kids La Paz. The charity serves the residents of the Colonia Vista Hermosa, one of many impoverished colonias in La Paz. Hundreds of children in these poor colonias live in extreme poverty, often lacking running water and electricity. Many of them have to share a cot with their parents or siblings, and in some cases, sleep on the ground.
In February 2012, funds were raised for a single mattress for a family in need. Since then, numerous families have come forward to express their need for mattresses for their children. To date, through the generosity and support of many giving individuals and organizations in La Paz (such as La Paz Gringos and Club Cruceros,) over 60 mattresses have been provided to needy and very grateful families. The 60 mattresses represent a small portion of the actual mattresses that are needed.
What We Need & What You Get
A used mattress generally costs 350 pesos (about $25) so a little money goes a long way towards keeping these kids off the floor!
With a goal of $2000, approximately 80 mattresses can be purchased!
ALL funds donated will be used exclusively for the purchase of mattresses.
Witnessing a child’s face light up when their mattress is delivered is very rewarding. It inspired us to participate in this fundraising endeavor that was initiated by several charitable individuals. We feel this is important because so many children don't have a bed to sleep in, thereby making it impossible for them to get a good nights sleep. The lack of sleep negatively impacts their ability to concentrate at school.
Other Ways You Can Help
If you are unable to donate there are still many ways you can help make a difference. By sharing this link with your friends, family, co-workers, Facebook friends, or tweeting about it, you will help us achieve our goal.
Thank you for your concern and support
