I am a professional photographer who has been documenting the wildlife of Banff National Park and the surrounding area for the past three years. I would like to make a documentary (combination of photo and video) showing the wildlife in the different seasons and how they live in the park - which includes using the roads and having to deal with traffic, tourists and a major highway running right through the park.
In the past year, we have lost wolves and bears to the roads and train tracks, and now we have been given another chance with 6 new wolf pups born in the Bow Valley this year. We have two orphaned cubs that survived their first winter without their mother, and they have to learn to safely negotiate train tracks, roads and tourists as they grow up.
Many tourists visit the park every year, and their lack of understanding about wild animals means they constantly approach wildlife and crowd the animals, and it is simply impossible to educate everyone incident by incident. In addition there are many people who speed through the park, and it seems to be very difficult to get the message across that they are endangering the wildlife. A pro-active approach to teaching people about the wild animals is needed and I would like to make something that people will watch before they visit the park. I will also include the nearby provincial parks which are also rich in wildlife.
The aim of the documentary will be to build awareness and educate people about the wildlife in the park. I plan to release it on the web for free public viewing. Businesses and organisations in Banff will have free use of the video for promotional or educational purposes. Ultimately I would like for every visitor to see this film before arriving in Banff, and get excited not only about seeing our wildlife, but viewing the animals safely.
Money contributed to this campaign will go towards filming equipment, fuel expenses and talent to create the footage and the final product. I am seeking financial backing as I do not have the money to fund it all myself. The more money I raise, the more I can invest in the project both in equipment for a professional product, and also time. My funding goal is a modest sum to enable me to purchase the necessary equipment and pay for gas.
I studied ecology at university and I have over 30 years of photography experience - and I want to use my skills and expertise to do some good in the world. With my passion for conservation and my background in design and multimedia work, I feel that I have the skills to make a documentary worth watching.
Perks will include free prints and sponsor credit on the video. Corporate backing will be rewarded with additional promotion beyond the stated perk - the world will know that you helped out.
Please help me in my dream to share the beauty of the natural world with everyone and help educate people about conservation. Thank you.
