North VAncouver island has no therapy/ABA homes for children with Autism as the B.C. government has shut them down and has stalled for the last 20 months opening the therapy home our son needs. We want to help this situation improve now!
We are starting a non-profit to help first our son Shawn but also when we get him into a safe environment where the extensive therapists and interventionists can work with him and help us keep him safe and out of pain we will then move onto helping other biological parents whom are also being crushed by current government legislation. Families do not come first here in B.C. despite what the current government may tell you(the public). There are very deep pockets for foster parents and "care facilities" but very little help for parents and their autistic children.
Here is our story:
We are trying to raise money to help keep our autistic medically ill son from further harm. Our target is $250,000 to buy a home through the non-profit to help offset the minimal funding available to create an ABA home here where we live. This is a therapy home. The home would be owned by the non-profit(the community basically) and available to other children with serious needs like our son. We need to custom the space to his needs and this is very difficult as a renter.
If in the end we raise a lower amount perhaps we provide a long term lease to help house him and create space for the extensive therapists and respite providers. There is a vast area here where there is no space for him as the current government has been steadily closing down these facilities.
Our son has struggled his whole life with pain and severe inflammation in his stomach, intestines and bowel. He is Autistic and can't tell you when or where it hurts. He has behavioral issues such as not understanding danger, being non-verbal, being a flight risk and so on. He also has allergies to Gluten, Milk, Eggs, Chicken and intolerances to other foods. After taking him to the U.S. for medical treatments and therapies we lost the ability to build our home to help keep him safe with us.
He needs a therapy home to help him manage his pain and keep him healthy. It is far too difficult and complicated for 2 parents to manage
and he is reacting negatively to a life of chronic pain. We have been told that if we can't manage our son he will go back to the facility where a staff member assaulted him and also the facilty could not follow his medical regiment with professionalism and caring. Failing that he would be placed in a psych-ward in a mental facility or hospital-HE DOES NOT BELONG IN A PSYCH WARD!!!!! He is a precious beautiful sweetheart with so much against him medically and emotionally.
Most government facilities cost a minium $250,000 a YEAR....yes A YEAR! and I'm told the quality of care at that level of funding is sub-par. Also adults with just similar behavioral needs cost the tax payers $30,000 a month. The facility that I quoted earlier that Shawn was in was paid upwards of $6,000 a month. SO WHY CAN"T WE MAKE THIS WORK WITH THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE HIM!!!! Current government support to biological parents is shameful!!!!!
Please help our son and others like him!
