What started out as a simple Youtube video, and general research on Icelandic music for a web-series, ended up becoming the first full-length feature documentary on one of Iceland's most up and coming bands, Árstíðir.
»Árstíðir: You just have to know of me« tells the story of an up and coming acoustic band formed in the pulsing heart of Reykjavik, whose music is as full of contrasts as Iceland’s seasons, from which the band derived their name. This intimate music documentary explores the journey of Árstíðir, who sound quite different from the spherical and mystical sounds of ‘typical’ Icelandic bands such as Björk and Sigur Rós.
In the production of this documentary we spent more then $50,000 out of our own pocket to realize this project. We followed the band over a period of 12 months and witnessed the emergence of their new album 'Svefns og vöku skil'. The film offers insights into the writing of the new songs and their first performance in front of an audience. After several screenings at film festivals around the world, we want to produce the DVD, and we need your help!
The DVD comes as a high quality-digi pack with a 32 page booklet and a slipcase. The Disc will contain the complete documentary with subtitles in English, Icelandic, Russian and German. Extra features will include excerpts of the traditional annual concert at Frikirkja from 2010, as well as extra footage from the well-known web-series 'Sleepless in Reykjavík' and selected music videos of Árstíðir. The duration of the DVD will have more than 100 minutes.
What We Need & What You Get
The film is already produced and has been screened at the Reykjavík International Film Festival, The Nordic Film Days Luebeck and the NORTHZONE Festival Berlin. Submissions to several film festivals around the globe are still pending. We are currently adding finishing touches to the DVDs in preparation for Árstíðir's extensive tours throughout Europe this summer.
However, we need to raise at least $5,000 to ensure the printing of the DVDs. Independent filmmaking is not an easy task, but we know we have a great product about a sympathetic and talented band with wonderful music.
Raising money through Indiegogo will help us get this film out to the world and bring the film to your home. We want the people who have not yet known Árstíðir to discover the band as their devoted fans already have! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for supporting this film and the incredible band.
For your support you will receive several compensations like the DVD which equates to a preorder for a special discount price before official release. Depending on the amount pledged, we also offer a digital download of the official soundtrack as well as a signed film-postcard, the official movie poster, a CD bundle including Árstíðir's 2 full length albums 'Árstíðir' and 'Svefns og vöku skil', personal credit on the website and actual DVD as 'Associate Producer' and more.
Where Will Your Money Go
In order to complete the DVD and send you a proper high quality product, we need funds for the authoring and printing. We’re passionate about telling Árstíðir’s story and the $5,000 will allow us to pay the invoice of our pressing plant and to send a copy of the DVD to you.
Should we fall short of the target in this campaign we will offer a full refund .
Trivia, Reviews & Quotes
'Although a very private group, director Lilja Häfele attended rehearsals and observed the members everyday lives for a long period of time. Thus "Árstíðir: You Just Have to Know of Me" includes exclusive material that Árstíðir is usually very secretive about such as working on a new song for the very first time.‘ - Árstíðir
'A portrait of the Icelandic band Árstídir, whose melodic-melancholic sounds have seen it grow from being a mere tip for insiders to pan-European popularity. “Árstídir” is the Icelandic word for “seasons”. The band from Reykjavik that came up with this name for itself is making a reference to the many contrasts of Iceland‘s climate: endless, sunny summer days, a sinister, melancholy winter, an autumn, coloured blood red by foliage, and a gentle spring. Árstídir‘s melodic music is indebted to these natural phenomena. It is “grounded” in the best sense of the word, making it more typical of Iceland than its band members would ever admit. The film allows for plenty of statements by the six musicians that belong to Árstídir, who talk not only of their music, but generally of life in Reykjavik. There is wonderful footage from a concert in a small club as well as from their annual performance in Frikirkja.' - Nordic Film Days Festival Catalogue
'Each of their songs, whether it's a poignant ballad or the troubling Kill Us which sounds surprisingly brutal when performed live, penetrates the depths of the soul. Árstíðir’s music sends you on an amazing journey from which you return astonished and full of gratitude.' - Michael Lazutkin, Zvuki
