What is ARC?
Arc Render cluster is designed to be a free resource for any 3D artist to use. Our mission is to help others reach their rendering goals as well as helping others any way we can. We plan to support Blender and LuxRender.
Who can use it?
ARC will be free to use by anyone for any purpose, this means you can use the cluster to render commercial work as well as open work. You can also render anything you would like (as long as it's legal); we don't want to censor art.
Why not use a distributed model?
We don't want to discredit a distributed compute model, however there are potential downfalls to such a system. In a distributed model, you are using lots of CPU and RAM in systems that may be underpowered or in use, meaning that the renders will take significantly longer than if they were processed on a local cluster. Also, the remote computers' security cannot be verified, so a nefarious donor could get frames of your work without your permission.
What else will ARC do?
We plan to implement support for project hosting (where artists can collaborate using tools such as Git, Subversion, etc), as well as forums where users can get help, file hosting, and more that we feel will help artists achieve their goals.
Why isn't ARC running?
ARC Currently needs to make equipment purchases to begin creating our service, however the equipment can be quite costly. In order to fully realize the service, we need some funding.
With your contirbutions, ARC will be off the ground in the coming month or so, but until we meet our fundraising goals, we cannot run the service.
