AXWFF promotes and screens women's experimental films that feature underrepresented themes and issues distinct to women and girls. The films will enlighten new audiences, allowing them to become familiar with such work and perhaps inspire them to make their own experimental work, after seeing these alternative forms.
Women's vision, often stemming from and joining together familial, social or body issues, is unique. Films with such themes and form, as well as experimental films made by women, are an alternative to what is presented at most experimental screenings.
Experimental work affects both the filmmaker and the viewer in ways that other forms of cinema or television cannot. It encourages critical thinking and dialogue, challenges the viewer to consider ideas on deeper levels, and sometimes uses techniques designed to affect perception. Experimental works, in general, are made to be seen in a theatre where their content fully envelopes the viewer, satisfying both a conscious and unconsious level of the mind, presenting an alternative to viewing moving pictures at home on YOUTUBE or another similar platform.
Last year was the 1st Official Festival where 9 artists were screened. 6 more shows followed throughout 2011, featuring works by 40 other filmmakers. All shows were screened at Anthology Film Archives NEW FILMMAKERS' Womens Night in NYC. We will continue to program shows there is 2012.
For its 2nd year Festival in 2011, AXWFF will screen & celebrate at MILLENNIUM FILM WORKSHOP (http://www.millenniumfilm.org) with 2 screenings and a panel discussion led by Kerrie Welsh on November 5.
