Alice's Adventures in Wonderland with a Twist
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland for the iPad is an interactive application as well as an experience of Renaissance art. Illustrator and creator Emmanuel Paletz has created new ways to simultaneously transport readers and crack the riddles of Lewis Carroll's long-admired classic.
This story has been told many times before but never in this light. With incredible detail, subtle imagery, and historical influence, Paletz has designed more than a whimsical children's book.
With the application's interactive features, combined animations, and sound effects, readers will find a new way to get lost in reading. This book is for anyone who is craving adventure.
People who love Renaissance art will sit down with this application and appreciate the hints and riddles Paletz pulls from Carroll's work and weaves into his collages. Parents will sit with their children and bring them lessons in history and art through Alice's highly imaginative tale.

About the Project
Twelve years ago, I started to develop the concept for illustrations for a version of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I wanted to use Dutch and Flemish Renaissance art to transport readers into Alice’s adventure. In fact, I incorporated some of the same paintings that inspired Lewis Carroll. It took me about four years (on and off) to finish the illustrations.
This is more than an illustrated version of a classic children’s tale. It is an art book app, a conceptual book app, a coffee table book app, and an interactive, educational book app. I plan to design it as an book application for the iPad and Android Tablet. My version of the book app is for children, parents, and anyone who appreciates the arts of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It is truly an adventure for all ages.
This application will provide an amazing experience through animation and interactive features.
Why This Project Is Unprecedented
I’m taking my expertise in art and design to a new level and combining it with my passion for classical children’s literature. This is a totally fresh and inspired visual approach to Lewis Carroll’s Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Influenced by the artistic sensibilities and strikingly lifelike images of Renaissance painting, I set out to give the same kind of lifelike feeling to the magnificent fantasy world of Alice.
To describe the colorful events and idiosyncratic characters of this book app, I gleaned bits and pieces from Jan van Eyck, Joachim Patinir, Albrecht Dürer, Hans Holbein, Sandro Botticelli, Pieter Brueghel the Elder, Hieronymus Bosch and more, combining them into my signature visual collages which dazzle the eye. Given that “Alice” is a app book filled with riddles, puzzles, illogical delightfulness, and brainteasers, I challenged myself to echo them in a conceptual visual interpretation. My take on Alice succeeds in bringing high art to high literature and encouraging both children and adults to read and love this time-honored classic.
Finally, this tale is being told like never before because I’ve combined art and storytelling with the interactive elements of the iPad and Android Tablet.
My Fundraising Goal
I’ve completed all of the illustrations for this book, but I need financial support to develop it into an application for the iPad and Android Tablet. My fundraising goal is $16,800. My budget must estimate enough for quality images and programming.
How You Can Help
Please help me fund this project so I can bring it to its full potential. If you’re unable to donate, help spread the word by posting this page on Twitter or Facebook. Every little bit helps and is greatly appreciated!
I have previous success with designing two cookbooks, but I’m taking my talents in a new direction with Alice. To see more of my previous work please visit http://www.emmanuelpaletz.com. For more information on the Alice App, go to http://www.thealiceforipad.com.
