Short Summary
Belgian NGO Beauty Without Irony is organising an exhibition titled “Air/Port 2013” that will be held in Essaouira (Morocco) from July 5th - September 7th this summer. The project will unite Moroccan and international artists (including Olaf Breuning, Daniel Riera, Mustapha Rafik, Mohammed Laouli, Baki, Ben Ali, Felix Richter, Tom Tosseyn, Nick Hannes, Marie-Françoise Plissart, Thierry Van Biesen and many more) as well as young students in an exhibition and in helping concretely some of Essaouira’s most disadvantaged youth get on their feet again and begin a professional life.
The artworks will be printed on flags along the major avenue of Essaouira while the original artworks themselves will be exhibited in local galleries. Donated artworks will be auctioned at the end of the exhibition, with the proceeds going to 2 local NGO's: Assocation Lutte Contre Le SIDA (an HIV/AIDS organisation) and Project 91, which helps local impoverished young people improve their prospects for a good future.
Beauty Without Irony (BWI in short) began with the ambitious goal of making the world a more beautiful, charitable and socially harmonious place. In 2000, BWI founded Designers Against AIDS (DAA) as a response to media ambivalence towards HIV/AIDS and safer sex practices, which meant younger generations were growing up with incomplete knowledge of the disease. Deciding to focus on those younger generations, the foundation took it upon itself to see how it could rejuvenate the message and truly communicate with them. This resulted in developing creative campaigns using social media, which became popular and awareness projects with key fashion brands (H&M, Eastpak, MAC Cosmetics, Marc Jacobs…), musicians (Katy Perry, Rihanna, Pharrell Williams, Yoko Ono…) and other celebrities who have a young fan base to speak on behalf of DAA and instigate conversation around responsible sex and personal health.
At the end of 2010, Designers Against AIDS launched the International HIV/AIDS Awareness Education Center (IHAEC) in Antwerp, Belgium. A place where young students from all over the world come to learn how to set up simple and effective HIV prevention and awareness programs. The students take this knowledge home, to replicate these campaigns in their countries of origin. Using DAA’s decade+ work as a successful model, BWI continues to expand its realm of social issues and charitable causes.
