A Welcome Mat at Every HOME: Save the Community Housing Center

Creating opportunity in America’s 6th most segregated metropolitan area

Hello friends. We are Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME), a Buffalo-based, non-profit fair housing organization serving the Western New York region.  We run the Greater Buffalo Community Housing Center (CHC), a program that since 1999 has helped nearly 4,000 families escape concentrated poverty and racial segregation.  Because of reductions in government and foundation support, we will be forced to close the CHC in 2013 unless we raise the funds to keep this successful program going. We are confident that -- with your help and the help of others like you -- we can achieve our goal.

Buffalo sits at the heart of the nation’s sixth most segregated metropolitan area and is the third poorest city in America.  The CHC addresses the problems of racial segregation and poverty by expanding housing opportunity.  With your support, we can continue the fight for social justice.

The CHC is a cost-effective program that really makes a difference in the lives of participating families.  CHC counselors help people understand their housing rights and the advantages of moving to opportunity communities with access to better schools, employment opportunities, a safer and healthier environment, and a better quality of life.  CHC staff provide apartment listings, emotional support, and even help in paying security deposits.

It costs approximately $135,000 to run the CHC for one year.  We have set the modest goal of generating $5,000 in new support in order to generate awareness and interest from government, foundations, and private donors.  Every dollar raised will go toward helping families move from impoverished and segregated neighborhoods to communities of choice and to start a better life.  In addition to your tax deduction, we have some fun perks to reward your generosity.

Buffalo is known as the City of Good Neighbors.  Let’s live up to that reputation by ensuring a welcome mat at every HOME -- save the CHC.
