Thanks for Checking Us Out!
Throughout my career, I've been a writer in several capacities: a journalist (The Village Voice, Newsweek, The Nation, The New Republic, Harper's, GQ, The New York Times Magazine, and The New York Times), an author (including The Road to Hell), and a professional screenwriter (writing scripts for HBO, Sony Pictures, Phoenix, and working with actors such as Chris Tucker and Reese Witherspoon.) I also support other writers as co-director of the Sirenland Writers Conference with my wife, Dani Shapiro.
I'm Directing for the 1st time. Why Now?
Because after many years of writing for other people, I've a written a very personal script based on real people and real experiences. I knew even as I was writing it that I had to direct it myself.
What is A Short History of Decay about?
It's about Nathan Fisher, a 35-year-old struggling Brooklyn writer who can't seem to get out of his own way. When his girlfriend kicks him out, and his dad has a stroke he heads to Florida to help take care of his parents. In their small beach-front condo, Nathan struggles with his heartache, his mother's Alzheimer's, and his father's decline. In this dark comedy, Nathan learns that the secrets of his parents long, sometimes rocky, marriage have a lot to teach him.

What's the Money For?
With the funds we already have in place, I can make a good movie. But I want to make a great one.
The money we're raising here on Indiegogo, it's not for equipment, or craft services, or props: it's to buy us TIME. Anyone who's ever worked on a movie set knows that time is the most expensive part of the process. Time in certain locations. Time with cast and crew. Time to catch the right light. I want to make sure we have enough time built into our shoot so that everyone can do their best work.
I have an amazing DP (Nancy Schreiber) and world-class actors on this film - I do not want to rush them. I want to give them all the time to relax and practice their craft. That way, at the end of the day, we will all know that we've done our best work. I can't do anything less.
The money you contribute will also allow us to hire a 2nd unit in Sarasota, as well as do some shooting in New York City (rather than faking it in North Carolina.)
Anything we raise over $50k: you'll see it up on that screen when you see our movie. Not a cent will be wasted.
The Cure Alzheimer's Fund
Additionally, a portion of the proceeds of the movie will go toward Alzheimer's research. I've partnered with Sally Rosenfield and the Cure Alzheimer's Fund to make sure it gets to the right places.
Let's Talk About Perks
When you give to these crowdfunding thing-a-ma-jigs, I give you presents. Consider me your Santa Claus for the day. Except at the end of all of this, you won't have to pick up bits of wrapping paper - we'll have a movie to watch instead.
For your contributions, I'm offering DVDs, signed scripts, credits in the movie, visits to the set, video messages from the stars, baseball caps, etc.
The ball caps, by the way, will feature a logo for my production company, Big Fan Films, designed by respected political cartoonist and illustrator Barry Blitt (The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, etc.) We are only making a limited number of these hats, so if this is up your alley, jump on it. A great holiday gift, in my humble opinion...
Fund A Better Future
When you support this film, you are not only helping me make my passion project, you're helping to bring light to an issue that affects every family: aging parents.
One of the unique aspects of this campaign is that we will donate a portion of everything we collect toward Alzheimer's Disease research. It doesn't matter at what level you give: part of YOUR contribution will help other people. The end. (More updates on our connections with respected research organizations soon.)
If we don't reach our goal...I don't want to think about that, but you can rest assured that we're making this movie regardless. However, raising this additional money will allow us to make the best damn movie I can make. I hope you'll help me do that. You won't regret it. And not just because you got a fancy baseball cap.
