I'm raising money for the production of A REASONABLE DOUBT, my first project since having graduated from NYU. We'll be shooting this September in Brooklyn, NY and I'd greatly appreciate your help in making it happen.
A REASONABLE DOUBT is a moral drama that centers around a young policeman's struggle to act justly when he comes to believe that his superior has a vendetta against a suspect he's been ordered to interrogate.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
Around the time that I was in undergrad, something that was always weighing heavily on my mind were the seemingly unending reports of police brutality and harassment that had been occurring for the past several years, particularly those that had happened in New York City. Musing on the fact that many of the more severe of these incidents had so often seemed to affect people of color (Sean Bell, Abner Louima, etc.) I couldn't help but wonder about the experience of a police officer (of color), who, themselves is forced to perpetrate an act of harassment while on the job.
Out of this thinking comes "A Reasonable Doubt," a story that's evolved these past three years into the 10-minute film I'll shoot this summer. The film's central questions: could you bring yourself to act justly in a situation where it's more convenient to make an immoral choice? What if your career depended on it? If someone else were depending on you?
THE STORY.
Night.
A desolate, industrial street, the type of place no one would want to find themselves after hours.
Two plainclothes officers pull to a stop, curbside. After a time, one catches sight of a pedestrian, several yards away.
With midnight fast approaching, Officer Byrd suggests that they return to homebase to clock in for the end of their shift. Davis, however, insists that they follow through and approach. After all, what could it hurt?
As they roll up on the passerby, Byrd can't shake the feeling that there's more to interrogating this suspect than meets the eye.
