Located in the historic West End of Main Street in Gloucester, MA, Short & Main is a collaborative effort between the four of us: Amelia, Nico, Howie and Matt. Our vision is to create a full, clattering, joyous family-style Italian pizzeria. It will have roots in pizza Napolitana (thin crust, wood-fired oven pizza), but also include a New England style raw bar highlighting local oysters, cherrystones and lobster. Short & Main will serve food that is hand-made, honest and highlights local produce, seafood, meat and cheese. We're working with our friends at Concreteworks in Oakland, California to design a customized cocktail and raw bar to compliment our Mugnaini wood-fired oven straight from Tuscany. Guests will enjoy sipping locally brewed beers, naturally made Italian wines and hand crafted cocktails while oysters are shucked and pizzas are cooked right in front of them.
Short & Main is in the final stages of restaurant construction and we plan to open our doors in early May. We hope to enter this final stretch with a financial boost from our supporters. We've completed a good deal of the remodeling and design work ourselves to mitigate costs, having spent the last few months painting, scrubbing, buffing, designing and building. We're now ready to install our Mugnaini pizza oven, which is where you, our contributors, come into play. The wood-fired oven is the focal point and the driving force behind of our restaurant. And it comes with a hefty price tag. Coupled with the permits and fire suppression required for such an oven, this is by far our greatest expense. We are hoping to offset the cost through this Kickstarter campaign so that we can open on time and within our budget.
Please take a look at the rewards we have on offer and choose one that's right for you. Thank you for taking the time to look at our project and for your generosity in making our pizza oven a reality.
Nico and Amelia met and fell in love while cooking at Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California. They weren’t together long before Amelia learned of Nico's passion for building, designing, and cooking in wood ovens. When you talk to Nico about wood ovens, there is a palpable excitement in his voice. He is opinionated, well-educated and passionate about the subject, which makes him an excellent teacher. He taught Amelia how to cook in a wood oven at Chez Panisse and built an oven of his own design in their backyard in California. When they left Chez Panisse after six years to open The Market Restaurant in Amelia's hometown, Gloucester, Massachusetts, Nico deeply missed cooking in a wood oven. But that’s about to change.
Capitalizing on the success of the Market Restaurant, Amelia and Nico, now joined by their new business partners Matthew Cawley and Howie Correa, are in the process of opening their second restaurant, Short & Main. Now going into its fourth season, The Market has been a great success on many levels. In just a short time, it gained critical success and was featured in Food & Wine magazine in August 2012. The restaurant has been well received by the local community as well as the larger Boston food community. With this success has come the added bonus of drawing friends and colleagues from New York, San Francisco, and Seattle to work in Gloucester for the summer months. This group of dynamic restaurant folk makes The Market vibrant for employees and diners alike.
Matt and Howie were part of that easterly migration and have helped The Market to become a truly unique and beautiful place to eat and work. Matt is the resident designer and is the driving force behind the aesthetic vision. He’s also an integral presence in the dining room as the energetic and inviting host. Howie is the master of the ever-changing beer and wine list. He brings with him an experienced and informed palate, and recently collaborated with Scribe Winery in Sonoma, CA to create their first rosé. He is also experienced in restaurant management and service, having spent time at such establishments as Chez Panisse in Berkeley and James Beard award winning Delfina in San Francisco.
With so much enthusiasm, talent and energy at their fingertips, Amelia, Nico, Matt and Howie felt it was time to expand their business and create a place that encompasses all that they love about the pleasures of the table.
The Market Restaurant and Short & Main both are, and will always be so reliant on our close friends. To all the artists, builders, helpers, Thank you! And most of all a special thanks to Sam Fuller for the great video!
