Who We Are
We are Phil and Julian. We are graduate students from the US and South Africa, respectively, and we are both studying abroad in the UK.
Both of us are also very passionate about staying active, and we want to inspire others to stay active as well. We want to help people jumpstart a more active part of their lives. As Bruce Wayne said, “People need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy.” While that quote itself is dramatic, there is a valid point there. People often break their New Year’s Resolutions around this time in February, and we want to inspire others to keep pushing. You can follow our blog here! You can also follow us on Twitter. Our contact email is email@example.com.
With that, we want to challenge ourselves to run the Pyongyang Marathon in April in North Korea - we will document our training for and our experience in Pyongyang on our blog, and we will also post GoPro footage of our actual marathon run (we have been given tentative approval from Koryo Tours.)
What We Need & What You Get
We need an estimated $8000 of funding to make this vision a reality.
The awesome perks of being a contributor are as follows:
$20: Actual 10 Won currency note from North Korea (decirculated).
$50: A t-shirt with the words “Pyongyang Marathon Team” and a winged foot on the front, and the gorgeous Indiegogo logo on the back.
$100: A t-shirt as described above (you have to option of having it signed or unsigned), a currency note from North Korea (signed or unsigned), and a shoutout on our blog.
$200: Everything described in the previous level, plus full access to all pictures and video footage that Phil and Julian take.
$500: Everything described in the previous level, plus Phil and Julian will print cutouts of you (please provide a suitable picture) and take pictures with them in front of various monuments in North Korea. Phil and Julian will send these to you via email, and they will be glorious.
$1000: Everything described in the previous level, plus you will receive a personal visit from Phil and Julian (wherever you are in the world) to go on a fun jog (if you want), followed by lunch or dinner, which is on Phil and Julian (as long this meal does not contain gold leaf).
$2000: Everything described in the previous level, plus you will be listed as an official sponsor of the Anna Foundation.
Note: "Everything described in the previous level" essentially means all the items from all the levels above, if you follow the wording.
For any CUSTOMIZATIONS (shirt size or signed/unsigned choices), please email firstname.lastname@example.org with your choice and your address so we can cross reference it.
A significant portion of the money we receive will be donated to the Anna Foundation in South Africa, an organization we have partnered with that promotes the 3 R’s of reading, running, and right-ing (encompassing the intellectual, the physical, and the moral) among youth from rural areas. Julian is from South Africa, and we both hold a compassionate interest in South Africa. We feel that the Anna Foundation’s holistic approach to the wellbeing of young students, especially in giving importance to physical activity, is truly a worthy cause to donate to. Here is their website.
For a delineation of the costs, the best way into the Pyongyang marathon is through an established tour group, so flights and tour costs are one component of our costs. We also have training and registration costs, video and electronic equipment costs, and various other costs.
This campaign comes with the hope that we will inspire others to be more active, and to share the experience of training for a marathon and the singular experience of running one in North Korea. There has never before been GoPro footage taken in the Pyongyang Marathon, so this will certainly be a first. We are excited to share this on our blog.
The aforementioned partnership with the Anna Foundation also excites us immensely, and we hope we can fundraise from all of you guys for such a great cause.
There have been many times in our lives where we have stopped being active - just sat around watching Netflix or something else equally passive. Everyone would be a lot happier if they went outside and were more physically active. Like we mentioned earlier, we want to help people jumpstart a more active part of their lives. “People need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy.” Thank you so much for your support.
