My name is Jennifer Johnson. I was diagnosed with IHSS, now called HOCM (Hypertrophic Obstructive CardioMyopathy - Heart Disease) in February of 2011 when I was 5 months pregnant with my son. I am a 30 years old woman, married to my wonderful husband, Robert, with two beautiful children - my daughter Mikayla who is 2 1/2 and my son Malykai who is 1. (Pictured above)
During the course of my heart journey, since diagnosis, I have found out that I need open heart surgery to have a septal myomectomy and a mechanical mitral valve replacement. Further conversation with this surgeon has made me understand that surgery is needed very soon. In his words, "There aren’t very many cases like you out walking around."
In an extensive conversation with the surgeon, I found out that I need to get my dental work fixed before I can continue with my heart journey. I have neglected my teeth for some time now because of the overwhelming expense of dental work vs the expense of caring for two small children; my kids have always won. I am now in serious need of some pretty expensive procedures. Being on Medicaid and having what they call a "share of cost", bills are stacking up that we don’t have the money for. Now I have to think about paying for my teeth before fixing my heart. I am concerned if I am even going to make it until surgery.
My husband works a low wage job, less then full time, trying to support the 4 of us. He is a very dedicated man who will stop at nothing to make sure he keeps a roof over our head. Most often he works his regular job and then goes off in the evenings to complete side work to make ends meet.
With my current medical standing, it has caused him a great deal of stress about how we are going to afford everything - from dental work needed before surgery and then surgical after-care while he has to work to continue to provide. We have currently hit a major financial road block.
Today to ask for help to get the proper dental work completed so that I can move on with my open heart surgery. I also need financial help for the after-care of recovery. I ask for this so I can continue to care for my two beautiful children who mean the world to me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
