I had never heard of Joanna Macy until I found myself in a three-day workshop with her a couple of years ago. As she spoke of the uncertainty of our times and the pain we all carry for the fate of the planet, I was amazed and moved.
Because it wasn't all about gloom and doom. A hard-nosed realist, Joanna also knows that when things look bleak, human beings respond with great wisdom and ingenuity. Her story of what she calls "the Great Turning," the global shift from destruction to sustainability, is deeply inspiring.
"Don't be afraid of your heart breaking open," she tells us. "The heart that breaks open can hold the whole universe. It's that big."
Joanna, I realized, was changing the way I saw the world — just as Joseph Campbell had done for me and countless others who watched him in the Bill Moyers series Joseph Campbell and The Power of Myth many years ago.
I knew that the world needed Joanna’s wisdom and unique perspective on these times we're in. We needed millions of people, not just the hundreds who attend her workshops each year, to hear her words. Joanna agreed to sit for a videotaped interview, so my collaborators, Kristen Chamberlin and Colby Gottert, flew with me to Joanna’s home in Berkeley, California, where over the course of a memorable day we conducted a two-and-a-half-hour conversation.
A gift to the world.
How do we continue to show up when the world is such a mess and it's so tempting and easy to look away? What do we do with the fear we carry for the planet our children and grandchildren will inherit? How can we begin to replace a deeply destructive economic system with one based in justice for both people and the planet?
For many years, with humility and humor, Joanna has shared her understanding of how we might live with gratitude, joy, and power in these uncertain times.
Now, we are on the verge of offering the highlights of our interview with Joanna in a 42-minute DVD, presented in chapters so individuals and groups can watch it all at once or just one section at a time.
Your pledge can make it happen.
We're almost done. The rough editing is complete. Your pledge will enable us to finish the editing in the studios of DDC International in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. We will be using remarkable footage already shot by DDC in more than forty countries to create a video as beautiful as the wisdom Joanna shares. We will also complete audio and color correction, produce the digital master, and print the first run of the DVDs.
