Davis has a lot of murals. Davis has a lot of bikes. But Davis is missing one thing....
A Fantastic Community Bike Mural!
This summer, help me (Danielle Fodor) paint a monument to cycling in the heart of downtown Davis, at the corner of 3rd and F Street. This will be the inaugural mural for my new public art project -- Paint Bike Fun, which involves children and communities in making great public art about cycling.
This Bike Fun mural will be the first community-designed and painted mural in downtown Davis in over 10 years, and the first and only mural about cycling in Davis!
The intersection of 3rd and F street is the heart of downtown Davis, known as the "Bicycle Capital of America". 3rd street is the main bicycle corridor that connects UC Davis campus with the city’s restaurants, cafes, and Davis Farmer’s Market. The wall, on the SW corner, is perfect, with architectural framing to make two wheel-shaped panels.
Why me? Why this project?
This project was born when my young son refused, for several months, to ride in his bike trailer. While in the car, he would talk about all the other "race cars" on the road, and begged us for "Cars" brand sunglasses and backpack. It made me think about all the powerful, fun images that children see about cars and trucks -- movies, books, clothing, TV shows, and more. I wanted biking to be that FUN. And I wanted to use the tools I knew -- working with kids and communities to paint great public art.
I have been painting community murals in Davis for about 8 years. I love to work with people to create vibrant images that showcase our values and collective imagination. Some of my murals can be seen in the UC Davis Arboretum and the Davis Art Center.
A Community-Driven Project:
This mural has included community input from the first moments. Davis children, youth, and grown-ups created nearly 200 art pieces about Bike Fun, in response to a public "Call for Ideas" and a free, public design workshop. I did the final studio work, putting everything together and coloring it in.
Painting is also a community endeavor. I have been painting for 5 weeks (July & August) and invitde the community to continue participating by joining me on a paint days, 5 days a week. Our painters are a wide variety of people -- children, adults, teens, professionals, retirees, students, unemployed folks. The wall is a place for people to meet and work together as equals. Send some money! Get cool stuff!
This mural is happening! This mural has received amazing support from grants, the City of Davis, and local organizations that has paid for the original materials, printing, and the bulk of our costs. But we need a little more...
My fundraising goal is $2500. This money will fill a gap to pay for the mural's equipment(signage, safety cones), materials (extra paintbrushes & palettes), and a small portion of my labor (4 months of participatory design, teaching painting, training volunteers, and doing community outreach), as well as for permits for the street party that we will hold on August 17th, to celebrate the mural's completion.
I will give you awesome stuff for your donation! Beautiful, high quality art greeting cards, a stylish bike coloring book, and/or a high-quality print of the mural. If you give a lot of money, you could get your name on the mural plaque, or pick a piece of art from my studio!
