We want to change the electricity grid. You interested?
Why it Matters
The energy landscape in North America is already in the midst of a major overhaul. Despite all the recent advancements in government policy, rebates and incentives, smart grid applications and turnkey technologies, there are still barriers to generating community solar.
Individuals and households living on low income and in areas exposed to the health impacts downstream of hydrocarbon-based energy production are often shut out of the technical, policy, and financial opportunities.
The Energy Solidarity Cooperative was formed as a response to this imperative, and we see ourselves part of a larger whole, because communities deserve local control over local resources. In reaching our fundraising goal we can prove that communities can become energy resilient and that good ideas can be supported by their communities independent of traditional, top-down financing models.
In the spirit of environmental and social justice, we are kicking off this campaign on June 5th, World Environment Day, and concluding it on July 6th, International Co-op Day!
What Your Contribution Means
So what are you supporting? As a founding contributor, your dollars are going to literally kick off a massive funding drive called a direct public offering (read more here: http://bit.ly/XiakAN) to help finance between 3 and 5 community-owned, cooperatively-run solar power projects. The direct public offering serves as an alternative to top-down financing models such as venture capital and large banks.
We are currently partnering with schools, non-profit organizations, and community groups in Oakland, California to install systems serving as educational sites on urban rooftops or brown-field reclamations. But we won't stop there. Some of the money generated will be re-invested in more community power projects!
This IndieGoGo campaign plus the Direct Public Offering will demonstrate a viable path to community-owned solar. ESC plans to build off this foundation to develop a platform and path to community-owned energy for institutions and individuals, including both on-site and off-site community solar projects.
Who We Are
The folks behind ESC are a dynamic team of architects, engineers, planners, policy analysts, group facilitators, educators, researchers and community leaders.
But above all, we're energy activists who believe in a different way of doing things. We'd like to fund these clean power projects in the same as they will be owned and managed—from the ground up, through grassroots involvement of people like you.
Check out the slew of exciting rewards being offered as a show of appreciation for your contribution and thanks for helping community power grow!
