Raising kids is about community, right? We are 3 feminist moms trying redefine the words community and family. This fundraising campaign will allow us to renovate our house so we can comfortably live and raise our kids here in downtown Albany.
Motherhood, especially single motherhood can be isolating. Instead of living individually with our children, constantly lacking in childcare, money for bills, and companionship, we've decided to band together. Together we will support each other and the kids, with the goal of raising 5 awesome boys who can be whole, positive people with a full range of emotions in this messed up society. We want our boys to be proud to cry in public because more tears means less fucked up adult man issues. (Just saying that we want the boys to grow into anti-sexist men who are able to cry and then talk about it.)
Think one of those polygamy reality shows, minus the husband and religion, plus social justice. Lots of social justice.
What your contributions will provide
Specifically, we will use the funding to baby proof (soooo much babyproofing) our house, build loft beds, and finish part of the basement into a playroom which can turn into an extra bedroom as the kids get older and need more space. We have some great creative storage ideas, and will be painting the new bedrooms. We will also install flooring in the basement. Baby toes running to the potty on cold wintertime concrete? No. Any amount you can donate will be helpful, as we only need to buy materials and will be doing all the work ourselves and with the help of a few friends and family members.
We think that our way of living can be a model and inspiration to parents who (for whatever reason) are not living the monogamous partner/ marriage lifestyle. We're not asking you to fund our single mom pity party, but to help us make this vision of what life can be happen for us and our kids.
Perks for contributing!
If you help us reach our goal with a contribution of $20 or more, we'll send you a family portrait/ holiday card/ thank you card (because the best way to express our gratitude is by sharing the beautiful faces of our boys).
One thing that is very important in this house is food. Good, mostly healthy food. One of the moms in the house is the neighborhood's notorious bomb-ass baker and chef, and she will lead our cookie baking team to delicious heights. With a donation of $50 or more, we'll send you cookies plus a thank you card. You will taste our gratitude.
If you really enthusiastically support our project with $100 or more, we will send you a thank you card plus a mind-blowing flourless chocolate cake just in time for New Years Eve, or your random February fancy dinner party. You can also opt for an original, one of a kind Lego sculpture that the two oldest boys have generously offered to make. They are really creative and passionate about Lego, having recently showed their work in a Lego art show at their school. The cake won't hold up during shipping, so that reward is for Albany locals only, so if you live far away you can choose the sculpture or extra cookies.
Meet the mamas:
Deirdre (the bomb-ass chef you heard about already) runs the kitchen and garden program at our neighborhood radical school, as well as teaching cooking and baking, and being an unofficial counselor in the kitchen. She also singlehandedly operates a Farm-to-Table summer camp and actively participates in a food justice coalition starting up in Albany NY. She recently received a Badass Feminist award!
Rana runs a teen garden in downtown Albany where she grows food with teenagers while teaching them about food justice, nutrition, and community building. She is also a social justice activist, musician, and fire spinner.
Kelsey is a dedicated anarchist who recently held an internship at USCRI, the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants where she assisted refugees in setting up their new Albany lives. Fascinated with the birthing process and with a passion for women’s birthing rights and education, she is a doula in training and studying to become a midwife. She is also currently working to offer free Spanish language childbirth education classes in the area.
