We are 2 dancers/performance-artists from Denmark, who have been working together for several years. Through this project, we want to address both the question of originality within art (what is original, is originality needed to create artistic quality and is anything truly original) as well as the need for spreading the open-source mentality into the arts; in our case, the performing arts.
Through all of 2012, we keep an online video-notebook, where we upload 1 idea per person and day. These ideas are rough sketches for characters, choreographies, situations and other performance-related things. In addition to the vide-notebook, we also upload at least one short text per day, with a minimum length of one sentence.
All of the material we upload is open-source, which means that anyone can use it, copy it, re-make or re-work it and be inspired by it for their own work. We demand nothing in return, other than that we be mentioned as inspiration and are told if you use the material.
We also welcome comments, either written or in the form of video-comments. All comments will also become a part of the project, and will be free for us and others to use.
In the beginning of 2013, we will collect all of the material and create a performance using it. This performance will open in Copenhagen, Denmark, but we also hope to take it to other countries if it is a success here. The process of creating the performance will also be documented and will be uploaded as an open-source video for others to use or be inspired by.
We hope that this will open more artist to the idea of sharing their work and methods with others so that the performing arts can progress more and keep developing. We want our performance to be everybody's performance, with the chance of all the material we use, to have already been used by others.
We will finish the project no matter the amount of money we manage to raise. But of course, the finished performance will only be able to go as far as the funds allow.
What We Need & What You Get
We are asking for USD 10.000,-. In addition to this, we are funding through a Danish web-site, and are applying for funding through the Danish Arts Council as well as some private donors.
The entire project has a budget of USD 38.000,- which are to cover the following expenses during the production period in the beginning of 2013:
Renting a rehearsal space
Wages for 2 performers (during rehearsals)
Wages for a stage technician
Renting a stage
Paying for costumes
Paying for set-design
Paying for the building of sets, including materials
Transport of materials to/from workshops and stage
PR, including web-design, adds in newspapers and online, posters and flyers
We will create the best possible performance, using the funds we raise, and anyone supporting us, who is in Copenhagen when we open will receive free opening-night tickets.
In the event that the performance is a success and we go abroad with it, any funders, regardless of the amount of money they have contributed with, will receive free tickets if we are in their home-country or a country where they happen to be at the time.
Anyone who contributes, will get his/her name on the poster, even if this means that the poster has to be enormous:-). And if you don't want us to mention you, just say so and we won't.
We will, as stated above, create a performance, no matter how much money we raise. But, the finished performance will be easier to create, and have more production time, the closer we get to our total budget.
