About 2 Blocks of Art
“I’ve yet to find an art walk as unique or grassroots as 2 Blocks of Art, with its truly community driven arts experience. The use of unconventional venues engages people beyond the usual arts consumer, bringing art of a community often overlooked and providing local artists with new audiences and expanded exposure.” -- Deborah Frieden, consultant for arts and culture in communities
2 Blocks of Art are celebratory events conceived and produced by Urban Solutions to promote artists, small businesses and community-based organizations in San Francisco’s emerging Central Market neighborhood. They feature local artistic talent in storefronts, retail businesses, community centers and galleries on 6th Street as well as outdoor street performances along Market Street. With over 100 local artists exhibiting or performing in 25 locations, the art walks strengthen the overall identity and vitality of the neighborhood.
2 Blocks of Art showcases a neighborhood rich in culture and well known for its cutting edge arts community. Now in its third year and growing, Urban Solutions started 2 Blocks of Art on Sixth Street between Market and Howard. With the San Francisco Arts Commission as a partner this year, the events extend to Market Street from Fifth to Seventh Streets with dance, live music and interactive murals. New this year, there will be an arts market and children’s activities on Minna and Natoma Alleys.
A tremendous collaborative effort, participating organizations include Bindlestiff Studio, Inks of Truth, Kularts, Intersection for the Arts, Burning Man, Scrap, and Grey Area Foundation for the Arts as well as galleries Satellite 66, 1AM, Laura Kudritzki Photography, and the Luggage Store.
EXPERIENCE THE NEIGHBORHOOD The events are easily accessible from either Civic Center or Powell Street BART stations in San Francisco. Come out to Sixth Street between Market and Howard and Market Street between 5th Street and 7th Street on September 28 or October 19 from 4-8pm to enjoy the art and discover something new about the neighborhood. About Urban Solutions
Urban Solutions is a 20-year old community-based organization dedicated to creating economic opportunity and building healthy sustainable communities. Headquartered in San Francisco’s South of Market (SOMA), our mission is to strengthen underserved neighborhoods by supporting small businesses, job creation, diversity and sustainability.
In addition to attracting businesses to the area, Urban Solutions takes an active role in the community, offering small business consulting, assistance securing microloans, free workshops and help with adopting sustainable business practices. We also offer extensive services to small businesses from our second office in the Western Addition.
We have served over 4,800 small business clients, helped businesses secure 335 loans and create 590 jobs since we started. Between 2003 and 2011, we helped to reduce the commercial vacancy rate on Sixth Street from 43% to 9%. And we’ve worked with small businesses to reduce 5,600 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. 92% of our clients are from low-to-moderate income neighborhoods or households.
BUILD COMMUNITY BRIDGES: With California’s elimination of Redevelopment Agencies this year, Urban Solutions has lost a major source of support to revitalize the Sixth Street corridor and Central Market in San Francisco. Your support will help us continue programs to:
- Unite the historic South of Market community with the booming Central Market area
- Enrich the neighborhood with a diversity of small businesses
- Sustain the local artist community by providing entrepreneurship opportunities for them
Thank you for your donation to Urban Solutions!
