The Ara Project is a Costa Rican non-profit organization that’s breeds, for the sole purpose of release into the wild, endangered Scarlet & Great Green Macaws. With only 2000 Scarlet Macaws left in Costa Rica and only around 2500 Great Green Macaws left in the world the Ara Project is proving breed for release to be a valuable tool to prevent further declines in the numbers or even extinction of these magnificent birds. We work in conjunction with MINAET (Costa Rican Ministry of Environment, Energy & Telecommunications).
To get an idea of what we are trying to accomplish as a project and the long-term dedication of the project team and supporters check out the video attached to the gallery!
The project has around 180 birds housed in its breeding facility on a property near Alajuela and this property has been sold, against our will. We currently have around 3 months to re house all these incredible birds. We have already been donated the land near Punta Islita in northwest Costa Rica but we now need quickly to raise the funds to build the infrastructure to move and house the macaws.
What We Need & What You Get
The first phase of the breeding center move will costs around $50,000, with this we can cover the costs of the bare minimum required to move and rehouse the birds safely. This money would be used to build a large aviary for each species (around 30m x 22m) and a house for a worker(s) and the considerable costs and time to move the birds. Each aviary requires strong mesh, metal frames, doors, roofing and snake proofing as the bare minimum, we will aim to re-use as much of the materials from our current site as we can, although much of this is old and unsuitable.
To complete the breeding center will require a further $200,000 at least, but once we have safely moved the birds we can restart raising the funds for this phase of the move. The plans for the new layout of the proposed breeding center are shown in the photo gallery.
Each donation will be recognized by putting your name on a plaque at the new breeding center in Punta Islita. Donations of $100 will be more or less equal to the cost of rehousing an individual bird and we will send you a photograph of the bird you helped to move. A donation of $500 or more will be a huge help allowing us to buy approximately two, 6m square panels for an aviary for example and you will become a macaw godparent for a year. You will receive an godparent pack all about your macaw, their history, photographs etc. Even if we don’t reach our goal all the money will be used to move us as far forward as we can with the relocation, thank you for your help!
Once the birds are rehoused we can continue on with what we do best, breeding young macaws for release back into the jungles of Costa Rica. Currently we have released over 100 Scarlet Macaws and are just finishing our second release of 10 Great Green Macaws. The birds reintroduced have a survival rate of around 85%, which is a remarkable figure and testament to our intensive soft release methodology.
