Synopsis: In one of the world's poorest countries, it is the Golden Age of baseball. Nearly every dusty street in the Dominican Republic is filled with kids playing with makeshift milk-carton gloves, bottle-cap balls, and sticks for bats. Driven by the love of the game, and hoping to escape the country’s extreme poverty, an entire generation of Dominican children dream of being peloteros.
Live to Play, Play to Live follows these kids as they leave their homes at the age of 16 and travel to Major League Baseball recruiting academies speckled throughout the Dominican countryside, trying out dozens of times in hopes of signing a contract and being trained by a Major League ballclub. Less than 1% will ever make it the Major Leagues, but those who do, like Sammy Sosa, Pedro Martinez, and Miguel Tejada, fuel the dreams of an entire generation. It is a story of overcoming the odds, escaping poverty, and above all, living to play the greatest of games.
