Synopsis:
David Lasagna is the funniest guy you have never heard of.
He is a highly intelligent master of the absurd and an obvious extrovert;
but that doesn’t keep him from getting kicked out of college, the draft and
even the cult he joined in California. Despite his charismatic stage presence,
he doesn’t fit in. After a stint with a band,called " The Whalesuits", he invents
his own university complete with his own lecturers like Cowboy Bob Bart,
Dr Physician Pepper and Willy of the Slow and so The University of Dave is
founded as a buoyant platform for Lasagna's comedy and music.
This documentary uncovers the layers of a clever, hilarious original as he prepares and performs his one man show, The University of Dave Lecture Series.
His onstage personas are formal incarnations which lampoon why things don’t go as planned, don’t make sense or confuse him. Unlike other comedians, Lasagna
helps his audiences through the conflicts of life effectively using them to transform people through his humor.
He is trying to change the world one audience at a time with carefully hewn characters that share sides of his own personality: “ I don’t need 9/11 to tell me to be terrified,” says his frightened cowboy character. “ I have been fear-based my entire adult life…”
“When David speaks to audiences one of the things that really connects them to him is that he is bringing out frailties and insecurities that all of us have,” says Kate Davis a filmmaker and former bandmate.
